Investigating smart campus development trends in Australian universities

Smart campus is an emerging concept following the smart city research movement and is predominantly argued to be a miniature replica of the smart city providing an ideal prototype for university campus development. The smart campus concept has attracted much attention, predominantly due to the rise in artificial intelligence, internet-of-things, cloud computing and big data applications in advancing university campus operation efficiency. In recent years, Australian universities started to invest in smart campus technologies and development opportunities.ReferenceA brief background on …

Measuring higher education performance: a global comparisons using network data envelopment analysis

The research objective focuses on comparing the top 100 universities (according to the Times Higher Education) from 2010 to 2020. The objective of the project is fourfold. First, to derive appropriate research outputs per university. Second, employ a Network DEA approach to identify (in)efficiencies within the network. Third, to measure productivity change of universities using the Fare-Primont index. Fourth, to determine sources of (in)efficiencies and productivity. This project is both theoretical and applied. The applicant should possess strong mathematical and computational …

Medication and dietary supplement use and symptom severity of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is highly prevalent and clinically problematic, occurring in up to 60–80% of people receiving chemotherapy. Despite the high prevalence and significant patient and healthcare burden of CIPN, treatment options are limited. This project will explore the association between medication and dietary supplement use and symptom severity of CIPN to identify factors that might worsen or improve CIPN symptoms.

Exploring the value and potential of hyperlocal gift economies

The Australian federal government has committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 to address and reverse the effects of climate change and transition to a circular economy. Achieving net-zero will require a shift in how we use, share and dispose of products, and our relationship to our local communities and planet. In other words, this goal will require an extraordinary shift in the way we ordinarily live. As informal practices of circularity are already happening across Australian neighbourhoods, they have …

Efficient Parameter Estimation for Stochastic Simulations

Stochastic simulation-based models are routinely used in many areas of science to describe inherent randomness in many real-world systems. Applications include the study of particle physics, imaging if black holes, biochemical processes, the migration of animals, and the spread of infectious diseases. To apply these models to interpret data requires statistical methods to estimate model parameters.Unfortunately, standard statistical techniques are not capable of analysing data using these models. This is largely due to the model likelihood, the probability of the …

Life cycle assessments in the hospital space for waste reduction

Recovering, recycling, reuse and reducing waste in the health sector becomes more and more important as it will help hospitals to become more sustainable and to reduce their impact on greenhouse gas emissions. Life cycle assessments of materials, for examples plastic packaging, is an important tool to establish the best practice for recovery and recycling of these materials.
