Biological and clinical impact of the association of germline variations in KLK3 (PSA) gene in prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is the most frequently occurring cancer (after skin cancers) in Australian males, and the second most common cause of cancer death. While the 5-year survival rate for localised disease approaches 100%, extra-prostatic invasion results in a poorer prognosis. Kallikreins are serine proteases, which are part of an enzymatic cascade pathway activated in prostate cancer (Lawrence et al 2010). The most well-known member is prostate specific antigen (PSA) or the KLK3 protein, encoded by the Kallikrein 3 (KLK3) gene, …

Should Australia legislate to allow three parent babies?

In 2015, the United Kingdom legalised a form of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) therapy known as ‘three-parent IVF’ and, less colloquially, mitochondrial replacement therapy (MRT). This IVF procedure is aimed at enabling women who have mitochondrial diseases that would normally be passed down to their offspring to have a healthy child instead. The technique involves removing faulty mitochondria from the intended mother’s egg and replacing them with mitochondria from a generically unrelated woman (by transferring the intended mother's nucleus to …

Systematic evaluation towards the analysis of open-source supply chain on ML4SE tasks

Applying machine learning algorithms to source code related SE task is rapidly developing and attracts the attention from both researchers and industry engineers. While there are many program languages available, applying such techniques, i.e., the representation learning models, for different languages may achieve different performance. Particularly, they all have their own strict syntax, which determines the abstract syntax tree. Thus, a lot of different open-source supply chain are available, for example the parsing tools are used to build AST from …
