Designing smart visual technologies with people with intellectual disability

This research is part of a Future Fellowship project funded by the Australian Research Council. You will join a team of researchers and research students in the school of computer science, with expertise in the disciplines of human computer interactions and data science. In broad terms, the project is seeking to understand how the meaning of images can be computed and used in the design of intelligent interfaces which can be used by and support people with intellectual disability. The visual interactions …

Conversational agents that can see

The development of conversational agents, whether as smart home devices, or embedded in mobile devices or social robots, has started in the world of chatbots, with only text available, and then started to build audio features, and finally considering context through sensors and cloud knowledge, as well as offering images in response to a query. However, little attention has been paid to other conversational modalities, such as showing, pointing, or gesturing. The reliance on these is exacerbated in conversation with people …

Efficient parameter estimation for agent-based models of tumour growth

Cancer is an extremely heterogeneous disease, particularly at the cellular level. Cells within a single cancerous tumour undergo vastly different rates of proliferation based on their location and specific genetic mutations. Capturing this stochasticity in cell behaviour and its effect on tumour growth is challenging with a deterministic system, e.g. ordinary differential equations, however, is possible with an agent-based model (ABM). In an ABM, cells are modelled as individual agents that have a probability of proliferation and movement in each …

Sustainable energy transition with system dynamics

The challenge to keep global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels has become even greater due to a continued increase in greenhouse gas emissions (IPCC, 2023). One major challenge is the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy to reduce emissions (Gholami et al., 2016). The share of renewable energy in electricity generation has increased to 28.3%, however, an acceleration of the pace of the transition is required to limit global temperature rise (REN21, 2022).New energy policies are needed to …

Exploring the effects of interactions with intelligent agents in immersive systems

This research project aims to investigate the effects of interactions with intelligent agents on player experiences in various contexts, including videogames, learning-teaching, and complex data analysis. The intelligent agents will be developed using ChatGPT as a backend, and the studies will be conducted in both single-player and multiplayer settings, utilizing virtual and augmented reality technologies.

Hearing colour and seeing sound – switchable optoacoustic imaging agents

Optoacoustic imaging is a relatively new medical imaging technique. It utilises laser light to excite an imaging agent, which in turn converts this light energy into heat. This heat is dissipated as a sound wave, which can be detected with an ultrasound receiver. This technique aims to overcome the minimal penetration depth of fluorescence imaging, and the lack of molecular specificity of ultrasound. In this project we are aiming to develop and synthesize intelligent imaging agents for optoacoustics, which are able …

Enhancing clinical decision-making through AI-assisted agents

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has shown tremendous potential in revolutionizing healthcare delivery. This research focuses on developing AI agents that can augment clinical decision-making processes, ultimately improving patient outcomes. The project aims to explore and design novel AI architectures that integrate disparate medical data sources, providing context-aware recommendations for diagnosis, treatment planning, and care coordination. Despite the promising applications of AI in healthcare, significant challenges remain in integrating these technologies into clinical practice effectively and safely.
