Alleviating corruption: a data driven perspective
Corruption is cited as among the greatest challenges faced by government and citizenry the world over and threatens to undermine the very trust that is essential for a functioning democratic society. In order to earn and maintain public trust, governments at all levels must continuously strive to reduce corruption and uphold the highest levels of integrity.Amidst the countless human interactions and electronic transactions that occur within the public service on a daily basis are a complex and ever-changing variety of …

Climate justice: analysing eco-equity in the energy market
Climate justice aims at sharing the benefits and burdens of climate change equitably between individuals and communities, regardless of their socioeconomic status, geographic location, or other demographic factors (Upham et al., 2022). Yet, ethnic minority populations are disadvantaged, for example, with rising energy costs and limited access to renewable energy sources, such as African Americans in the United States (Nature Energy Editorial, 2020) or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in Australia (Cain, 2024).In this project, we analyse eco-equity as a …

Culture and corruption risks in local government: the role of technology in detecting fraud
A recent investigation by the Crime and Misconduct Commission found serious fraud and corruption across a number of Queensland city councils. This included inappropriate relationships between the Council and the private sector, in particular property developers and improper use of power and influence for personal benefit by elected councilors. This project investigates how council employees and councillors avoid detection under existing accounting controls, and how they can be strengthened. We will focus on the latest technologies for detecting financial misconduct and …

Care in Correction: Promoting Health in Australian Prisons
Half of Australia’s prison population have a disability. Correctional facilities have an opportunity to help people who require health care to recover, and by doing so, increase their likelihood of living independently and not re-offending. International examples show that the incorporation of health facilities into correctional facilities has been beneficial not only to prisoners themselves but to general public health practices as well. This has been especially the case for First Nations peoples in incarceration in Canada and New Zealand. Existing …

Efficient Parameter Estimation for Stochastic Simulations
Stochastic simulation-based models are routinely used in many areas of science to describe inherent randomness in many real-world systems. Applications include the study of particle physics, imaging if black holes, biochemical processes, the migration of animals, and the spread of infectious diseases. To apply these models to interpret data requires statistical methods to estimate model parameters.Unfortunately, standard statistical techniques are not capable of analysing data using these models. This is largely due to the model likelihood, the probability of the …
