Elevating performance: Innovative design strategies for body-worn (diagnostic or biosensing) devices
How does technology help us to support a person’s sense of wellbeing and/or performance? Beyond technology and metrics, how do a body-worn (electronic/biosensing) device be designed to fit the person in different contexts of use and different performance needs? We are investigating the role of designing with sensor technology (sensor technology agnostic) in body-worn devices from a Human Centred (HCD) lens, and Research through Design (RtD) approach. In today's fast-paced world, the pursuit of optimal human performance has become a paramount …

Understanding responsible deployment of computer vision for urban planning
Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) offer urban planning practice many novel prospects. By the responsive use of AI, planners can effectively analyse data, improve processes, increase efficiency, and prioritise human-centric aspects of planning to develop sustainable cities. Computer vision is one of the key areas where responsible AI is applied in urban planning to revolutionise the analysis and interpretation of visual data, like images and videos captured in cities to aid decision and plan making processes. While the potential impacts …

Investigating effectiveness of local government social media channels
As social media becomes more intertwined into our daily lives, having an online presence on social media has become common not just in the private but also in the public sectors. The use of social media in local governments has shown great potential in terms of improving the efficiency and effectiveness of citizen-government communication. It has also been effective in terms of increasing citizen engagement and participation. Therefore, this research project seeks to discover how do local governments leverage the …

Multi-microbial 3D printing for screening microbiome functions
The ability to 3D print bacteria has relevance to a wide range of applications, ranging from developing novel anti-microbial modalities to probiotics for promoting human health. Traditional culture techniques used in microbiology such as agar plates and suspension cultures have limited spatio-temporal control over the bacteria microenvironment as well as their interaction partners, in particular, mammalian host cells. This project aims to bridge this technological gap by combining 3D printing and microfluidics technologies to spatially control the localisation of multiple …

Advanced artificial intelligence based ultrasound imaging applications
Our research in the space of advanced quantitative medical imaging is investigating how to use ultrasound as a real time volumetric mapping tool of human tissues, to guide in a reliable and accurate way complex medical procedures1. We have developed several novel methods which make use of the most cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology2. For example, to show where the treatment target and the organs at risk are at all times during treatments in radiation therapy3, 4; or to inform robots …
