Lunar seismology: Using lunar seismology data for site characterisation at Schrodinger crater

QUT is involved in the science team for a recently Australian Space Agency-funded mission to Schrodinger crater, to deploy a Fleet Space seismometer. QUT is developing workflows to translate the seismic data into detailed subsurface models for site characterisation, off-world construction, and in-situ resource mapping of materials such as ice.

Extraction and formulation of astaxanthin produced in Phaffia rhodozyma fermentations

Traditionally derived from unsustainable petrochemicals, astaxanthin (AX) can also be sustainably produced by microbial fermentation. The yeast Phaffia rhodozyma naturally produces AX as its main fermentation product through sugar assimilation. In previous studies, we improved the bioprocess to produce (upstream) AX in P. rhodozyma. This project aims to investigate the extraction, recovery, and formulation (downstream) of the AX produced in our improved AX production process.AX is a carotenoid pigment and potent antioxidant naturally occurring in some ocean animals such as salmonids …

Space robotics: Scene understanding for Lunar/Mars Rover

The QUT Centre for Robotics is working with the Australian Space Agency on the newly established Australian space program, in which robots will play a key role. There are multiple PhD projects available to work on different aspect of developing a new Lunar Rover (and later Mars Rover) and in particular its intelligence and autonomy. Future rovers will not only need to conduct exploration and science missions as famous rovers such as NASA's Curiosity or Perseverance are doing right now …
