Overview

We have a current PhD research focused on an investigation into the use of sugar cane bagasse ash in geopolymer concrete.  The subject of this VRES is notably out of her research scope as it has a lot to do with chemistry (rather than structural engineering). While I have discussed with the PhD student that chemistry part is outside her scope (due to time constraints), having a VRES to assist would be tremendously good for the overall project. The topic is multidisciplinary (Chemical/Structural/Civil), but the project is run in School of CEE. Limited funding for carrying out tests in CARF is available from supervisor.

Research engagement

The researcher is expected to do a literature review on alkaline activators used in Geopolymer concrete, with a view to understand the important ionic properties; The researcher will asssit the supervisor and PhD student to prepare samples, and carry out characterization tests on a novel activator in QUT CARF facilities.

Research activities

literature review; meeting and discussion with PhD student and supervisor; preparation of laboratory samples, assisting QUT CARF laboratory technicians with carrying out the tests under supervision of PhD student

Outcomes

The outcome will be characterisation of a waste-based "waterglass" and  comparision with commercial activators; this can potentially inform industry project grant writings

Skills and experience

Having interest in waste reduction; interest in concrete materials; laboratory work is required
