Overview

Australia is facing an unprecedented challenge in guiding travel demand so that the society is not overwhelmed with more road, traffic and the associated health burdens. The mobility culture of Australia is dominated by private car accounting for more than 80% of the trip share. Rapid growth in urbanization and higher motorized travel activities in Australis has brought increased safety, efficiency and environmental concerns. Australian commuters spend almost an hour per day on road resulting in a 23% rise of mean commuting time between 2002 and 2017. The transport network is often approaching gridlock with increased delays which worsen our liveability and productivity. Given the negative externalities of car-oriented mobility, the advocacy of the travel demand management strategies (TDMS) has shifted from accommodating a higher number of private cars to the serious consideration of sustainable transport options including public transport. Most recently, the state governement of Queensland announced a 50 cent fare trial of public transport to encourage more people to adopt sustinable transport alternatives. The overarching aim of this project is to examine the impact of 50 cent fare on public transport ridership.
