Overview

The topic, "Exploring the Role and Challenges of Pharmacists in Providing Comprehensive Healthcare Services at Australian Airport Pharmacies," is an interdisciplinary project that intersects pharmacy, public health, and travel medicine. The project aims to explore how pharmacists operate within the unique environment of airport pharmacies to address the health and medication needs of Australian travelers.

The study seeks to understand and enhance the healthcare services provided by pharmacists in airport settings, taking into account the specific challenges and opportunities they encounter.

Research engagement

Aspects of the Project:

  • Literature Review: Conduct reviews of existing research on pharmacy services in non-traditional settings, specifically airport pharmacies.
  • Study design: Develop and refine interview protocols to gather data from pharmacists working in airport pharmacies.
  • Data Collection: Conduct semi-structured interviews with pharmacists to gather qualitative data on their experiences, challenges, and perceptions.
  • Data Analysis: Use thematic analysis to identify patterns and themes from the qualitative data collected.
  • Report Writing: Assist in writing research reports and academic papers to disseminate findings.

Research activities

Student Activities and Collaborations:

  • Students will work closely with an academic pharmacists and pharmacy practice researchers.
  • They will collaborate with airport pharmacy staff (as a part of semi-structured interview) and the research team.

Outcomes

  • Improve Practice: Know the current pharmacy services provided by airport pharmacies and provide recommendations for policy and practice to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of pharmacy services at airports.
  • Identify Challenges: Understand the barriers pharmacists face in providing healthcare services and medicines in airport settings.
  • Expand Services: Explore opportunities for expanding the range of services offered at airport pharmacies.

Skills and experience

Eligibility Criteria:

  • A background in pharmacy, public health, healthcare management, or a related field.
  • Experience with qualitative research methods is preferred but not required.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Strong interest in healthcare service delivery and improvement.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.

Location

The primary research activities will be conducted at the Discipline of Pharmacy, School of Clinical Sciences, QUT. Some activities, such as interviews, may require travel to major airports in Australia or interview the pharmacists via zoom.
