Overview
IPE occurs when two or more professions learn with, from and about each other to improve collaboration and the quality of care (ANMAC, 2012). It is necessary for future health practitioners to learn with, from and about each other with the goal of improving health outcomes through more effective IPE (World Health Organisation, 2010). The preparedness of health professional graduates to engage in interprofessional practice has been identified as essential to designing and delivering health services that is person centred and responsive, safe effective, efficient and, as a consequence, sustainable. Such collaborative models are also identified as vital for engaging patients and communities as capable and essential partners in the activities of health maintenance and health improvement.
Internationally there has also been concern over the adequacy of preparation of undergraduate health professional students for working in an interprofessional environment and it is increasingly recognised as a core component of contemporary health professional education.
In 2024, we are building on a previous trial of an IPE experience between QUT and the Ulster University in Ireland where undergraduate students from Sri Lanka and Vietnam will also be joining a Wound Care International Interprofessional Wound care Masterclass and we will be seeking to evaluate this.
