Overview

Concentrated Solar Power technologies are gaining popularity and relevance in the sustainably energy sources exploitation. The efficient harvesting of sun power may guarantee a safe transition from polluting fossil-fuel systems to renewable energy. However, the central receiver is affected by very high thermal fluxes that need to be properly managed to avoid excessive heating and catastrophic failures. Aiming strategies control the power density on the surface of the receiver and need to be optimized to provide the maximum achievable energy avoiding dangerous damage to the receiver.

Research engagement

The project will be mostly based on analytical modelling of thermal modelling of the receiver and development of algorithms for optimal aiming strategies. An initial literature review is required to identify previous studies in the same area.

Research activities

A rigorous literature review of currently available aiming strategies optimization studies is required. Based on a study previously realized in-house, advanced aiming strategy will be tested. Optimization algorithms will be eventually used to tune the most effective cleaning strategies.

Outcomes

The main outcome of this work is a well-documented code for aiming strategies optimization. A written report regarding the activities performed is also expected.

Skills and experience

The ideal candidate should be curious and well prepared in coding (Matlab and/or Python), energy conversion systems, process control.

Start date

10 November, 2024

Additional information

The student will be provided with assistance in every step of the project. Previous models developed to assess aiming strategies impact will also be available.
