Overview
This project is part of a large interdisciplinary effort to convert low-value agricultural residues into high value bioproducts, in particular converting waste from the sugar industry into edible oils.
Research engagement
The project will primarily be hands-on lab-based work with training in Yarrowia fermentation and analysis of microbial metabolites. Literature review interpret and contextualise results will also be necessary.
Research activities
The student will receive training from PhD student Francisco Peralta and support him in setting up, running, sampling, and analysing fermentations.
Skills and experience
The ideal candidate is someone interested in using biotechnology to make food ingredients and chemicals with a miminal carbon footprint. You will need to have completed at least two units from ST01 that count towards the Biotechnology minor.
