Overview
Utilising the work of Stuart Hall and proponents of Black journalism, particularly Dr Amy McQuire, this project will examine the regime of racial representation of Indigenous women. The work of key Black journalists will be highlighted with a view examining how racialised representations are contested through an effective politics of representatation.
Research engagement
- Research assistant experience in Indigenous Australian led research.
- Develop an understanding of Critical Indigenous Studies including Indigenist research methodologies as it relates to journalism and media studies.
- Participate in Carumba Institute weekly reading and writing groups.
- Participate in Carumba Institute Activities.
- Draft a summary review of key Black journalists and locate how racialised representations are contested through their work.
Research activities
Students will work with Dr Amy McQuire, a prolific Aboriginal affairs journalist, academic, writer and commentator who has been published in Guardian Australia, the National Indigenous Times, The Saturday Paper, BuzzFeed News Australia, New Matilda, Vogue Australia, Marie Claire, The New York Times and The Washington Post, among others. She currently co-hosts Curtain The Podcast, which was named one of the top 25 true crime podcasts by New York’s Vulture magazine. In 2019 she won a Clarion Award and was nominated for a Walkley Award for her essay on the wrongful conviction of Aboriginal man Kevin Henry. She is an Indigenous postdoctoral fellow at the Queensland University of Technology. With Amy's guidance, students will look at research methodologies as they relate to journalism and media studies.
Outcomes
Develop an understanding of Critical Indigenous Studies including Indigenist research methodologies as it relates to journalism and media studies.
Skills and experience
Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students are welcome.
