Overview

This VRES project will explore concepts of race, justice and the legal system. This VRES project will examine whether and how race, as a structure that hierarchically orders people, is conceptualised and informs concepts of justice and is enacted through the legal system.

This project invites students to reimagine concepts of justice beyond the courtroom.

Research engagement

  • Research assistant experience in Indigenous Australian led research.
  • Develop an understanding of Critical Indigenous Studies including Indigenist research methodologies as it relates to legal and justice studies.
  • Participate in Carumba Institute weekly reading and writing groups.
  • Participate in Carumba Institute Activities
  • Draft a summary review that examines how race structures understandings of justice and its operationalisation through legal systems.

Research activities

Students will work with Helena Kajlich who works with a multidisciplinary team of researchers, academics and community partners on research led by Professor Chelsea Watego that addresses state racial violence against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. With a background as a legal practitioner and with research interests across law and political science, Helena brings a critical and interdisciplinary lens to the analysis of racism and anti-racist strategies and interventions.

Outcomes

Research assistant experience in Indigenous Australian led research. Students gain hands-on experience in research, which can enhance their employment prospects, inspire them to pursue higher research degrees and contribute to the development of knowledge in their areas of interest.
