Overview
This VRES project will consider whether and how race, as a marker of human difference, is currently understood and responded to within social work, both in terms of professional regulation as well as within social work education. This VRES project will involve a review of current policy and legislative requirements that frame professional regulation as well as academic scholarship that considers the function of race and social work in Australia and its implications for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Research engagement
- Literature reviews, drafting articles/papers
- Participate in workshops
- Participate in research experience outputs, including a written essay and oral presentations presenting their research findings.
Research activities
Students will work with Kevin Yow Yeh, a lecturer who completed his undergraduate degree in social work at QUT. He is also a research student at QUT, focusing on investigating ways to best support First Nations peoples through complaint processes. Students will:
- Develop an understanding of Critical Indigenous Studies including Indigenist research methodologies as it relates to their discipline.
- Participate in Carumba Institute weekly reading and writing groups.
- Participate in Carumba Activities
Outcomes
Research assistant experience in Indigenous Australian led research. Students gain hands-on experience in research, which can enhance their employment prospects, inspire them to pursue higher research degrees and contribute to the development of knowledge in their areas of interest.
