Overview
Health education provided by the generalist registered nurse (to people in their care) when working in the Australian health care system, must be person-centered with a collaborative approach to practice that embodies culturally safe and equitable practices. All information shared must be accurate and evidence based, while being guided by realistic goals and achievable outcomes. If health education actions breach any of those principles, it can cause great harm with the potential for a negative impact on the consumer’s morbidity and/or mortality.
The role and competencies of the registered nurse providing health education to the people in their care, has however been noted to be undervalued (Bergh et al 2015) and overshadowed by the educational roles of nurse educators teaching other nurses in both the university and clinical spaces (Wells-Beede et al 2023). This project aims to explore the literature describing the health education practices of generalist registered nurses working and teaching people in their care.

Research activities
The student will be engaging with Dr Helen Donovan, and will be working with the librarian liaison officers. The student will learn and enact the principles behind advanced search strategies and how to effectively use a referencing tool.
Outcomes
The aim is to identify the current position of the literature in relation to the topic, to explore gaps for ongoing research.
Skills and experience
A student who is interested in learning skills of literature searches and critical review.
