Overview
Dietary intake in childhood and adolescence lays the foundation for lifelong food preferences, dietary quality and health. However, studies of dietary intake consistently show that young people do not meet recommendations – with excess energy intake derived from discretionary foods and low intakes of fruits and vegetables.
Adolescence marks an important shift with respect to dietary intake. Young people take on increasing responsibility regarding food choice, purchasing and preparation, while parental responsibility decreases. A scoping review will be undertaken to understand the range of food-related tasks that adolescences may engage in, and the degree of responsibility they assume for these tasks. Understanding processes underpinning food choice may provide insight into how to improve dietary quality amongst young people.
