The open pasture is home to several research projects:
- Insect screen houses are used to study the behaviours of pest and beneficial insects to better understand their life cycles, how the pest species detrimentally affect the health of plants, and how biological control methods can increase horticultural crop yields.
- Since 2018, this pasture has been undergoing reforestation to restore the degraded creek bank and re-establish native riparian species to the area. The 1950m2 area was overgrown with introduced pasture grasses and environmental weeds, which have now been eradicated. More than 1,650 new tree species have been planted to enhance the biodiversity of the SERF property and surrounding areas, which will increase wildlife habitat and improve soil stability.
