Learn on the job
'QUT provides me with the theoretical knowledge of construction methods, systems and solutions that support what I have experienced onsite in industry. During my studies I have worked on numerous Department of Education school buildings for the Hutchinson Builders Yatala Modular Yard. I am currently onsite for a luxury residential high-rise project on the Gold Coast, which has given me experience in traditional construction methods.'
Queensland's 40 under 40 winner
QUT alumnus Nicole Detsimas, co-founder of Belnic Constructions, received the prestigious Queensland 40 Under 40 Awards. Belnic Constructions is one of the few commercial construction companies in Australia with two female founders. The company turned over $8 million in projects last year.
‘I'm grateful for QUT’s construction management course which was directly relevant to our work in industry. Many of my lecturers had practical, real-world experience in successful construction companies.'
Pursue your passion
'I was working with three recent QUT graduates at Constructions Group and I was envious of their knowledge and abilities and wanted to learn what they knew. I was still in treatment for breast cancer and at 55 years old I felt I was beyond studying. There is so much support and opportunity at QUT. It is exciting to meet with professionals and young people in a supportive and collaborative environment. It is something wondrous to find a passion for something so late in life and I count myself extraordinarily lucky to be given the opportunity.'
Cadetships while you study
'Thanks to the hands-on course and site experience tours at QUT, I was able to obtain a cadetship with Deluca. My tenure in the estimating and design division at Deluca has equipped me with valuable expertise, enabling me to apply the knowledge gained to my studies and my current role within the project delivery team. As a result, I have been able to expand my networks and gain valuable insight that is crucial for my future career aspiration to lead construction projects.'
Work-ready skills
‘Having worked in industry for the last two years of my degree, I have realised that the projects at university align closely to tasks and projects seen in the real-world. This is a key factor in why I believe QUT is the best university to choose, because what you are learning can be directly translated into practice making you a highly eligible candidate in industry. Thanks to QUT, I was able to secure a job in industry by participating in a university networking event and I have heard many fellow students have had the same experience.’
Build your dream job
'I would not be where I am today, fulfilling a dream of working at Multiplex on Queen’s Wharf Brisbane, without the resources and support I received from QUT. Queen’s Wharf is one of the largest construction projects in Brisbane and I am proud to be a part of such a significant project. There is a great sense of satisfaction in watching a project come to life, breaking ground and becoming a permanent part of the city’s landscape.'
Industry supported classes
'Most subjects in my degree regularly had industry professionals come in for guest lectures, after which I was able to regularly ask questions about internships and job opportunities. I have even been offered a couple jobs this way. Being taught by passionate industry professionals and academics has provided me with immense determination and inspiration to succeed in not only my university studies but in my career as well.'
Graduate position secured
'I found myself drawn to QUT due to its remarkable connections with the industry. Networking and industry connections are especially crucial so I am grateful to the lecturers and tutors that have diligently imparted practical knowledge and highlighted available opportunities that help to shape, guide and prepare us for the real world. Thanks to the networking events and industry nights organised by QUT, I was able to secure a position in a company and will gain work experience that is related to my current studies.'
Valuable industry connections
'I am undertaking a full-time quantity surveying cadetship at Rider Levett Bucknall while studying. I have applied the knowledge gained from my QUT course and further enhanced my skills through daily exposure to real projects. I have valued the opportunity to connect with professionals who generously provide both personal and professional advice. QUT facilitated connections with my peers and professors before starting, and I now collaborate and maintain working relationships with many of these connections within the industry.'

Gain on-site experience
'I felt that QUT’s course structure was the most diversified and in-depth in South East Queensland, and with accreditation from the Australian Institute of Building, it had the seal of approval I was looking for. During my studies, I joined QUT Construct, a student club aimed at helping students gain real world exposure on construction sites and networking opportunities in construction. By the time I left university I had built solid relationships with builders across South East Queensland.'

Careers and outcomes
Construction management and quantity surveying can be a challenging, meaningful and interesting career, with the prospects of extremely high job satisfaction and financial rewards. You may choose to work in private organisations such as large construction and development companies, or in government departments.
As a construction manager, you’ll supervise construction; coordinate subcontractors’ plans, materials and equipment; estimate costs and quantities of materials needed; and plan construction methods and procedures. You’ll also help ensure that the requisite standards of building performance, quality, cost schedules and safety are achieved, in accordance with the building contract documents, and that building projects under your supervision are completed — on time, to budget, and of the required standard of quality.
As a quantity surveyor, you’ll work predominantly on major building and construction projects as a consultant to the owner, in both the public and private sectors. You may find employment with consulting firms; local, state or federal government departments or authorities; and increasingly with building contractors, financiers, property developers, project managers and universities.
