In 2020 Beyond Zero Emissions launched the One Million Jobs plan, a roadmap for the creation of one million jobs that centre on sustainability, and a greener future. The provocation asked students to propose projects that communicated key aspects of the Million Jobs plan, or gave a creative representation of a future in which we invest in more sustainable practices.

Students projects worked with 360 degree video, IGTV and fashion and photography to raise awareness of the transition to more sustainable ways of living. The Beyond Zero 360 degree experience is our Spotlight project as it exemplifies the aims of the provocation, creating a 360 degree video that merges VR technology with collage and motion graphics to create an immersive experience. In it viewers discover what a post-Covid, low carbon Australian economy could look like and are invited to make an emotional investment in its future.

BZE 360 Experience

An engaging, experiential, 360° VR world which showcases Beyond Zero Emissions’ Million Jobs Plan. Viewers discover what a post-Covid, low carbon Australian economy could look like and are invited to make an emotional investment in its future.

Our project responded to Beyond Zero Emissions’ goal to "paint a picture" of a zero emissions economy. We asked ourselves what that picture would look like, and using data from the Million Jobs Plan we built a 360° VR ‘world’ bringing together collage, graphic design, motion design, video and original music.

The Green Vending Machine

The Green Vending Machine utilises refurbished vending machines to distribute native seedlings in an effort to promote greener thinking and living. With an old vending machine revitalised and ready to be put back to work, the machine will then be filled with young native seedlings in biodegradable packaging ready for any passers-by to collect and grow their own plants. A QR code attached to the packaging provides a link back to our website where the new plant owner can view information about the plant and other environmental facts.

Climate Challenge Chats

Climate Challenge Chats a strategic social media campaign through Instagram using videos (both IGTV and reels), social squares (adapted from existing content with facts, quotes, etc.), stories with polls, questions, promotional content and potentially celebrity lives. All of these aspects of the campaign will be focused on sharing information about BZE’s initiatives like the Million Jobs Plan and the Climate Challenge, as well as climate solution tips and tricks for everyday people who want to make a difference for the environment but don’t know how.

Beyond Fashion

Beyond Fashion is a website that houses all information to educate people on why and how to introduce environmentally friendly practices into our wardrobe. Responsible for 10% of global greenhouse emissions, the fashion industry is facing a rapid incline of carbon output as outlets compete with the fast pace of design and production (Worldbank, 2019). By promoting slow fashion and sustainable brands, the ‘Beyond Fashion’ project endeavours to reduce Australia’s carbon footprint, while increasing employability within the industry. By showcasing local and emerging designers, the hope is to encourage practitioners to consider environmentally friendly options presented through the project.
