QUT has been selected to offer the Queensland Government’s Turn to Teaching Internship Program. The program is open to students enrolling in the Master of Teaching (Primary) or Master of Teaching (Secondary) course.
Participants in the Turn to Teaching program will complete an accelerated program in the first year, including a summer semester. In the second year participants will continue part-time study while completing a paid internship.
Benefits
You will receive:
- $20,000 (taxed) in your first year of study
- full-time paid employment at a Queensland state school with a reduced teaching load (50%) during the second year of study
- a supervising teacher, mentor, and access to a community of practice for interns to share their experiences
- an offer of permanent employment upon graduation in a priority subject area or region.
Eligibility
To apply for the Turn to Teaching Internship Program, you must have an undergraduate degree (minimum 3-year Bachelor) in a field other than education or teaching, and be eligible for enrolment into the Master of Teaching (Primary) or Master of Teaching (Secondary) course.
You must also:
- be willing to undertake an internship at any state school in Queensland
- demonstrate commitment to teach in a Queensland state school in a priority subject area including the secondary subjects of English, sciences, mathematics, or technologies (including design and digital solutions), languages, special education, and/or priority regions (with possible rural or remote placements) for two to three years
- be an Australian citizen or have permanent residency status in Australia.
If you hold a Bachelor degree in a non-priority subject area, you are still eligible to apply. However, applicants who specialise in priority subject areas and are willing to work in rural or remote locations will be prioritised.
For more information on eligibility, visit Teach Queensland.
How to apply
Applications for the 2025 intake open on Monday 26 August and close on Sunday 22 September 2024. Applications can be made from the Teach Queensland website.
Program conditions
The Turn to Teaching Program has certain conditions to uphold each year of your studies.
In year 1 (scholarship year), you must maintain a ‘pass’ result each semester.
In year 2 (internship year), you must obtain a permission to teach with the QCT, accept a conditional offer of permanent employment as a teacher in a state school in a priority subject area and/or location, and graduate the ITE program by the end of the second year of the TTT Program.
For successful completion of the TTT program, you must maintain employment as a teacher in a state school in a priority subject area and/or in priority location for a minimum period after completion of the internship.
Failure to meet these conditions may result in re-payment of some or all of the scholarship payment.
