Thesis Title
Examining How Attention and Prediction Modulate Visual Perception: A Predictive Coding View
Supervisors
- Professor Kristin Robyn Laurens (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Alan Pegna (External Supervisor)
- Dr Naohide Yamamoto (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis investigated the relationship between prediction and attention in visual perception by recording electrophysiological brain responses. Visual paradigms were implemented using various manipulations of stimuli (shapes, neutral faces, and emotional faces), types of attention (spatial, featural, and emotion-guided), and prior precision of spatial location (low and high). This thesis found that during the early stages of visual processing prediction error signalling consistently occurs, with information then diverging into the associated brain regions for further processing for information updating. This thesis demonstrates that prediction and attention both interact and dissociate in the brain in distinct stages during visual perception.

Thesis Title
Parenting Couples' Experiences of Mental Labour: How Couples Conceive, Negotiate, Share, and Explain Mental Labour Division
Supervisors
- Dr Brooke Andrew (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Areana Ruth Eivers (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis examined how parenting couples manage mental labour; the thinking, organising, planning work that underpins running a family. This thesis used surveys of working mothers and fathers and interviews with parenting couples and found that mothers are responsible for a greater portion of the childcare and family mental labour while fathers are responsible for much of the household mental labour. Mothers experienced more negative impact from the mental labour they carry. Effective re distribution to improve sharing of mental labour is possible, particularly when both parents have periods of primary caring.

Thesis Title
From the Laboratory to the Community: A Study Exploring Factors to Make Exercise for Persistent Post concussion Symptoms More Accessible
Supervisors
- Associate Professor Jaimi Helen Greenslade (Associate Supervisor)
- Professor Graham Keith Kerr (Associate Supervisor)
- Professor Katie Louise McMahon (Associate Supervisor)
- Professor Karen Anne Sullivan (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
The aim of this thesis was to examine the literature on exercise rehabilitation for post-concussion symptoms and make recommendations for such exercise programs to be tested and implemented for the wider population. This research program identified exercise parameters that have shown promise in post-concussion rehabilitation studies carried out mostly on athletes, investigated existing knowledge gaps and misinformed attitudes about post-concussion rehabilitation in the community, and explored desirable features and barriers to exercising. The findings and recommendations from this research are expected to shape future post-concussion rehabilitation studies among diverse populations.

Thesis Title
How Intended Pathway Information Shared via an Augmented Reality HUD Can Assist in Semi Automated Driving
Supervisors
- Dr Sherrie Anne Kaye (Associate Supervisor)
- Professor Andry Rakotonirainy (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
Semi Automated Vehicles require the driver only to monitor because the automation controls the steering and speed under most conditions. However, when hazardous scenarios appear in the road ahead, drivers currently receive little information about what their car can see and what the intended manoeuvre is. This thesis investigates a design for a visual interface to address this shortcoming, guided by the Technology Acceptance Model: a shared intended pathway. Expert interviews, focus groups, two online experiments, and a simulator study were conducted to develop and test the design. Results showed promise for the design concept for a human machine interaction interface.
