Thesis Title

A Model of Transformative Destination Image

Supervisors

  • Associate Professor Amanda Tracy Beatson (Associate Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Steven Donald Pike (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

Travel’s power to transform individuals originates from both destinations and experiences, and yet, destinations remain unexamined within transformative tourism research. Using destination image as its theoretical scope, this thesis proposes the idea of ‘transformative destinations’ highlighting the importance of personal values and affect-based strategies to encourage positive behavioural intentions within this context. For this, a mixed methods approach was taken in which the first study used the Repertory Test with Laddering Analysis while the second study was a survey.

Thesis Title

Brand Selfie Credibility: Conceptualisation and Scale Development

Supervisors

  • Dr Udo Rainer Gottlieb (Principal Supervisor)
  • Dr Rory Francis Mulcahy (External Supervisor)
  • Dr Sven Tuzovic (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

A brand selfie is a type of selfie picture that demonstrates everyday consumption activity involved with a brand. Although brand selfies of consumers have been generally perceived as credible, what constitutes a consumer brand selfie as being credible has not been well understood in the literature. This thesis identified dimensions and developed the brand selfie credibility scale, which is new to the literature. Data from four studies were used in an academically robust scale development process, which results in a valid 10-item scale with three dimensions. By using this scale, marketers can choose credible brand selfies on social media.

Thesis Title

Entrepreneurial Learning in Business Incubators and Accelerators

Supervisors

  • Dr James Patrick Davis (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Colin David Jones (External Supervisor)
  • Professor Sara McGaughey (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis aims to understand the experiences of entrepreneurs embarking on business incubator and accelerator (BIA) programs and why learning and personal growth seem irregular outcomes. Using a Critical Realist inspired methodology and mixed methods, the contingent mechanisms and conditions that enable or disengage entrepreneurial learning for entrepreneur attendees of BIAs are explored. A model of trust-contingent learning within BIAs is presented, including the conditions – such as predatory behaviours – whereby trust may be lost and learning undermined.

Thesis Title

When Males Experience Customer Vulnerability: Masculine Norms and Value Destruction in Transformative Health Services

Supervisors

  • Professor Rebekah Russell-Bennett (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Katherine Marie White (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

Men have low use of transformative health services but compared to women, are more likely to die younger and from something preventable. This research is the first to find, while usually assumed to be resilient, privileged groups such as men experience likely customer vulnerability. Three quantitative studies using secondary panel data and an online survey were conducted finding also the effect of masculine norms on men’s health service use is dependent on service context, social generation, and conformity. The research is the first to find masculine norms and value co-destruction behaviours are key indicators of men’s customer experience of vulnerability.

Thesis Title

A Strategic Subordinate: an Outcome of Internal Communication and Employee Engagement

Supervisors

  • Associate Professor Amanda Tracy Beatson (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Kim Amanda Johnston (Principal Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Anne Bridget Lane (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

Employees play a key role in organisation success through enacting behaviours that support organisational strategic goals. While managers are expected to contribute strategically, this thesis investigates if subordinates could move beyond an engaged state. Using mixed methods, this research conceptualised and measured the attributes of a strategic subordinate as a significant outcome of internal manager-subordinate communication. The findings of this research theoretically contributes to employee engagement and internal communication, and practically guides organisations to identify and support subordinate contributions to organisational success.
