Thesis Title
Robotic Vision for Knee Arthroscopy
Supervisors
- Professor Ross William Crawford (Associate Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Davide Fontanarosa (Associate Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Ajay Kumar Pandey (Principal Supervisor)
- Professor Jonathan Michael Roberts (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This research focuses on visualisation challenges associated with anatomical imaging of complex joints such as the human knee. Current imaging systems are inadequate to provide 3D perception and lack the level of situational awareness needed for performing highly complex minimally invasive surgeries like knee arthroscopy. As a result, unintended tissue damage is common occurrence and training new surgeons takes a very long time. To improve surgical precision and training, this study presents a series of novel methods and computational tools that provide 3D perception for safer surgery with added ability of automatically recognition of multiple tissue types in real time.

Thesis Title
Automated Crack Detection and Characterisation from 3D Point Clouds of Unstructured Surfaces
Supervisors
- Professor Michael John Milford (Associate Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Thierry Peynot (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Charlotte Sennersten (External Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis proposes a novel automated crack detection and characterisation method on unstructured surfaces using 3D point cloud. Crack detection on unstructured surfaces poses a challenge compared to flat surfaces such as pavements and concrete, which typically utilise image-based sensors. The detection method utilises a point cloud-based deep learning method to perform point-wise classification. The detected points are then automatically characterised to estimate the detected cracks’ properties such as width profile, orientation, and length. The proposed method enables the deployment of autonomous systems to conduct reliable surveys in environments risky to humans.

Multimodal Image Correspondence
Supervisors
- Professor Clinton Brian Fookes (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Kien Nguyen Thanh (Associate Supervisor)
- Professor Subramanian Sridharan (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
Multimodal images are used across many application areas including medical and surveillance. Due to the different characteristics of different imaging modalities, developing image processing algorithms for multimodal images is challenging. This thesis proposes effective solutions for the challenging problem of multimodal semantic correspondence where the connections between similar components across images from different modalities are established. The proposed methods which are based on deep learning techniques have been applied for several applications including epilepsy type classification and 3D reconstruction of human hand from visible and X-ray image. These proposed algorithms can be adapted to many other imaging modalities.

Thesis Title
Collision Risk Modelling for Unmanned Aircraft Separation and Traffic Management
Supervisors
- Professor Jason John Ford (Associate Supervisor)
- Aaron Douglas McFadyen (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis develops models and procedures for designing safe airspace for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Mid-air collision risk models with foundations in manned aviation are extended and adapted to develop separation standards for UAVs whilst addressing the unique differences from traditional manned aviation. Airspace design is also investigated using mathematical optimisation which maximises traffic throughput to make high-density operations viable, whilst still maintaining a given target level of safety.

Thesis Title
State Estimation in Active Distribution Networks with Limited Measurements Using Disaggregation
Supervisors
- Dr Ali Arefi (External Supervisor)
- Adjunct Professor Gerard Francis Ledwich (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Ghavameddin Nourbakhsh (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
In this research work, a feeder-level disaggregation technique is established to visualize unmonitored rooftop PVs and batteries in LV feeders with limited measurement devices. The designed feeder-level disaggregation technique using the differential signals has the highest accuracy compared with other conventional techniques. Moreover, this thesis aims to develop a new state estimator for LV networks with high levels of PVs and batteries based on the suggested disaggregation technique. A developed state estimation technique has improvements in terms of accuracy and computational efficiency compared with other procedures.

Integration of Concentrated Solar Thermal Energy for Industrial Hydrogen Production
Supervisors
- Professor Sara Jane Couperthwaite (Associate Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Thomas James Rainey (Principal Supervisor)
- Professor Theodore Steinberg (Associate Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Geoffrey David Will (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
The research demonstrated a balanced process, energy, and techno-economic argument for the utilisation of concentrated solar thermal energy, essentially, for hydrogen production and other industrial process systems. The representative case studies undertaken in the research addressed process and solar thermal energy modelling, energy integration, process optimisation, exergy assessment, and techno-economic evaluation as it relates to renewable hydrogen and hydrogen-based fuel production. The research established that economic assessment studies, process-energy configuration, choice of renewable energy, and mixed energy options are key to the shift from fossil fuel to green energy and industrial production to significantly reduce the impact of climate change.

Thesis Title
Developing a Macro-Micro Teleoperation System with Snake Robots for Minimally Invasive Surgeries
Supervisors
- Professor Ross William Crawford (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr David Howard (External Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Ajay Kumar Pandey (Principal Supervisor)
- Professor Jonathan Michael Roberts (Mentoring Supervisor)
- Dr Liao Wu (External Supervisor)
Citation
Surgeons currently face the burden of poor instrument control, ergonomics and visualisation in minimally invasive surgery. Bioinspired snake-like robots, evolution algorithms, 3D printing and autonomous vision systems are innovations that can revolutionise surgery. It can benefit patients with personalised treatment and reduce the burden on hospital staff. This thesis utilises these innovations to develop a macro-micro robotic platform for knee arthroscopy with a (micro) steerable snake-like end-effector attached to a (macro) RAVEN II arm. Extensive experimentation with a phantom demonstrated the superiority of the robotic prototype in reachable dexterity and teleoperated control over conventional rigid instruments.

Fractional Distillation of Hydrothermal Liquefaction Biocrude
Supervisors
- Professor Richard John Brown (Associate Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Thomas James Rainey (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Jerome Luigi Atillo Ramirez (Associate Supervisor)
- Professor Zoran Ristovski (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis describes fractional distillation as an upgrading method for improving the quality of hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) biocrude as a green-based biofuel. Firstly, as a part of the biomass to fuel pathway, aqueous phase recycling in the HTL process increased the yield of biocrude production and reduced the nitrogen content. Secondly, fractional distillation improved the biocrude quality (e.g., lower nitrogen content, viscosity, etc), co-processing ability (with conventional fuels) and improved stability during storage. Finally, the learnings from fractional distillation facilitated more accurate process modelling of biocrude assisting biocrude application in the current fossil fuel supply chain.

Thesis Title
Learning Visuo-Motor Behaviours for Robot Locomotion Over Difficult Terrain
Supervisors
- Professor Peter Corke (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Jurgen Leitner (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis investigated efficient methods for learning locomotion behaviours for robots, and the challenges of combining several complex controllers. Experiments were performed with a dynamic biped in simulation required to walk across gaps, over steps and stairs, and jump over hurdles and blocks, and also in a real-world scenario with a large tracked platform negotiating small doorways. The developed solutions utilised perception to perform complex maneuvers while minimising retraining for new behaviours. Ideas from this thesis lead toward scalable behaviour libraries to enable robots to make their way into an increasing number of roles in our society.
