Mathematical Modelling of Person-to-Person Opinion Exchange: Understanding and Quantifying Polarisation
Supervisors
- Associate Professor Robyn Patrice Araujo (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Gentry Adair White (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
For most of human history, societies separated themselves based on their beliefs or opinions. We share our opinion with others in our social network. To understand how or why polarisation occurs, mathematical models of opinion exchange were developed. But early attempts at modelling opinion sharing demonstrated a bias towards consensus rather than polarisation. This thesis seeks to investigate polarisation. Methods were developed to determine the level of polarisation as were models that simulated the individual opinion exchanges that produce polarisation. All models developed were empirically tested.

Time-Frequency Analysis of Ship Waves
Supervisors
- Professor Scott William McCue (Principal Supervisor)
- Professor Timothy John Moroney (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Ravindra Pethiyagoda (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis uses mathematical and computational methods to analyse the composition of water wave patterns generated by ships. Using data measured by a stationary surface height sensor, we investigate how particular ship hull geometries affect the waves, including the complicated inference that occurs between waves generated at the bow and stern. Several mathematical models are compared to experimental data to determine a minimal viable model for simulating the effects of hull geometry. The effect of surface tension on the resulting wave components is also investigated and analyses are extended to account for this extra effect.

Contributions to Bayesian Transdimensional Algorithms
Supervisors
- Professor Christopher Colin Drovandi (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Alan Yusen Ley-Cooper (External Supervisor)
- Dr Matthew William Sutton (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Gentry Adair White (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
When conducting statistical data analyses, often multiple competing mathematical models are proposed. Assigning a weight to each model depending on how well they fit the data is a computationally challenging problem, especially when the mathematical models being considered are complex. This thesis develops novel statistical algorithms for addressing this model selection problem that are more computationally efficient and automated compared to previous approaches. A motivating example in the geosciences is presented, and subsequently, the novel algorithms demonstrated on challenging new examples and canonical examples from existing literature.

An Integrated Approach to Characterising the Groundwater Balance and Water Stress at Tamborine Mountain, Queensland, Australia
Supervisors
- Professor Leslie Anthony Dawes (Associate Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Lucy Reading (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
Groundwater management can be hindered in areas with a shortage of hydrogeological and water consumption data, due to a lack of available methods to assess the level of sustainability. This research presents investigations of water stress in such a system, combining short-term monitoring with external data sources to estimate recharge, water use and groundwater dependent ecosystem requirements. Water stress is defined as the ratio between the freshwater withdrawal, the environmental water requirements, and the available freshwater resources. This research found that the risk of water stress for the area was significantly greater for years where rainfall was below 1000-1300 mm.

Hybrid and Synergistic Drug Strategies for Biofilm Eradiction
Supervisors
- Dr Nathan Boase (Associate Supervisor)
- Professor Kathryn Fairfull-Smith (Principal Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Makrina Totsika (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
The adhesion of bacteria to surfaces and their ability to form colonies called biofilms can cause significant health risks to humans and presents a major economic burden to society. Biofilms have been shown to be significantly less susceptible to traditional antimicrobials than their single cell bacterial counterparts. This makes in vivo eradication of biofilm difficult for most conventional antibiotics. The work presented in this thesis demonstrated the anti-biofilm potential of nitroxides and nitroxide-containing analogues which utilised existing antimicrobial agents such as peptides, amino acids, and quorum modulators in order to move away from the use of conventional antibiotics.

Theoretical Investigation of Ferroelectric Properties in 2D Materials and Their Applications
Supervisors
- Professor Aijun Du (Principal Supervisor)
- Professor Anthony Peter O'Mullane (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis examined two-dimensional ferroelectric materials and their applications using density functional theory calculations. The research has revealed several novel applications for 2D ferroelectric materials. It illustrated that ferroelectric materials can be used to modify electronic, photocatalytic and magnetic properties of two-dimensional materials. In addition to exploring applications, new two-dimensional ferroelectric material which exhibits metallic properties was discovered through high through output search. Two-dimensional ferroelectric metals are extremely rare and only handful of materials were ever discovered.

Chemical and Biological Applications of Atmospheric Pressure Non-Thermal Plasma
Supervisors
- Adjunct Associate Professor Kateryna Bazaka (External Supervisor)
- Dr Carlos Horacio Luna-Flores (Associate Supervisor)
- Professor Kostyantyn Ostrikov (Principal Supervisor)
- Adjunct Professor Robert Edward Speight (External Supervisor)
Non-thermal plasma (NTP) is a promising research direction. The ability of NTP to generate reactive oxygen and nitrogen species and to operate at low temperatures has made it attractive for use in various chemical and biological applications. However, the mechanisms behind chemical applications, such as water purification and biological applications, have yet to be fully explored. This thesis demonstrates successful NTP application in water purification and metabolic control and explores the mechanisms behind the NTP processes. This understanding will be helpful for the broad integration of NTP applications in chemical and biological processes.

Catalytic Hydrolysis of Sugarcane Bagasse to Value Added Xylooligosaccharides
Supervisors
- Dr Luqman Abiola Atanda (Associate Supervisor)
- Professor Deepak Prakash Dubal (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Lalehvash Laleh Moghaddam (Associate Supervisor)
- Professor Kostyantyn Ostrikov (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
This research uses plasma pretreatment to produce XOS from lignocellulosic biomass and to modify carbon materials for applications in catalysis. Plasma pretreatment enhances the hemicellulose conversion and reduces the by-products in the hydrothermal processing of sugarcane bagasse. Plasma pre-treatment creates a porous structure and functional groups on activated carbon (AC), which is further acidified with HNO3. The plasma-acid-treated AC is used as a solid acid catalyst to hydrolyze hemicellulose from Solka Floc and sugarcane bagasse in one step while preserving cellulose and lignin. The research demonstrates the potential of plasma technology for biorefinery applications.

The Efficacy of Morphological and Genetic Owl Pellet Analysis Compared to Live-Trapping in Arid and Semi-Arid Australian Small Mammal Monitoring Systems
Supervisors
- Associate Professor Andrew Michael Baker (Associate Supervisor)
- Associate Professor David Alan Hurwood (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Alex Kutt (External Supervisor)
Citation
Owl pellets as a dietary analysis: can owl vomit act as a viable measure for small mammal diversity? This project applied a three-tiered comparison to determine the efficacy of owl pellet analysis as an ecological tool in arid landscapes. Owl pellet prey remains were analysed via bone morphology and environmental DNA (eDNA) to compare the utility of this approach with live-trapping. This project has demonstrated that owl pellet analysis can simplify small mammal surveys and provide an efficient and less intrusive alternative or complimentary method to live-trapping in arid and semi-arid ecosystems.

Functional Materials Induced by Interfacial Supramolecular Interactions
Supervisors
- Professor YuanTong Gu (Mentoring Supervisor)
- Professor Jingsan Xu (Principal Supervisor)
This thesis focuses on supramolecular interactions that construct functional materials. Based on a supramolecular organic crystal, a series of supramolecular interaction competitions were observed. Investigations into the competitions lead to a better understanding of the hierarchy of strengths of different interactions. This thesis proposes new synthesis methods for functional materials such as organic single/poly crystals, hollow supramolecular microtubes, organic-inorganic composites, and inorganic nanomesh membranes, and provides new knowledge of the mechanical properties of these functional materials at nano/micro scales.

Mathematical Modelling for the Tumour Microenvironment (TME) under Cellular Stress
Supervisors
- Dr Pamela Marion Burrage (Principal Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Dan Valeriu Nicolau (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis discovers mathematical modelling techniques that can be applied to the stressful tumour microenvironment (TME) by developing an agent-based model, systems of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and systems of stochastic differential equations (SDEs) driven by Chemical Langevin Equations (CLEs). The study suggests that understanding intra-tumoural communication in the TME at the cellular and tissue level supports identifying significant tumour microenvironmental factors that may cause tumour cell malignancy.

Light-Absorbing Carbonaceous Aerosols and their Sources in Australian Remote and Urban Environments with Insight into Secondary Aerosol Formation
Supervisors
- Associate Professor Branka Miljevic (Associate Supervisor)
- Professor Zoran Ristovski (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Boguang Wang (External Supervisor)
- Chunlin Zhang (External Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis examines the characteristics of light-absorbing carbonaceous aerosols in Australian urban and remote environments, with a particular focus on the impact of long-distance transport of bushfires and prescribed burning on the ambient aerosol composition. A custom-built oxidation flow reactor was then employed to investigate the evolution of light absorption of carbonaceous aerosols and secondary organic aerosol formation from eucalyptus burning emissions upon aging under real-world conditions. The results of this work can contribute to the knowledge of the changes in light absorption of organics from fire emissions in the Australian environment.
