Honourary Award Recipient - Doctor of the University

Emeritus Professor Catherin Bull AM

Emeritus Professor Catherin Bull AM is an award-winning landscape and urban designer, researcher and commentator who has championed the better planning, design and development of cities and environments.

She has a long-standing history with QUT, with ties back to the Queensland Institute of Technology (QIT) where in the 1980s, as senior lecturer in Planning and Landscape Architecture, she led the joint QIT / Brisbane City Council Study Gardens Point: Strategy for Use Rehabilitation and Development. This research strategy and associated development proposal achieved many significant improvements to the entire Gardens Point peninsula, resulting in enhanced use, access and connections to surrounding areas of historic and horticultural value - leading to the beautiful campus environment enjoyed at Gardens Point today.

After a period as the prestigious Elisabeth Murdoch Chair of Landscape Architecture at the University of Melbourne from 1998-2010, Catherin Bull returned to Brisbane in 2011 and was appointed as an Adjunct Professor. She has provided invaluable input into the QUT Master of Landscape Architecture. Together with her partner, former Vice-Chancellor Professor Dennis Gibson AO, she established in 2016 the QUT Landscape Architecture Centenary Fund that provides scholarship opportunities for talented landscape architecture students.

In addition to her work as an academic teacher, researcher and advisor to government and industry on development and design, Catherin has led national and international consultancies in landscape architecture and urban design. She has published two books and over 50 papers internationally, including as co-author of the 2011 OECD Global Science Forum report, Effective Modelling of Urban Systems to Address the Challenges of Climate Change and Sustainability.

A Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Emeritus Professor Bull has chaired and served on numerous Australian boards, juries, and planning and design review panels. She was the first woman President of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, elected in 1983. She was Chair of the Southbank Corporation in Queensland, from 2016-2019.

Emeritus Professor Bull holds a Masters of Landscape Architecture by research (MLArch) (1988) from the University of Melbourne and Doctorate of Design (DrDes) (1991) from Harvard University.

She is an Emeritus Professor of the University of Melbourne, a retired Member of the Australian Institute of Horticulture, a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects and an Honorary Life Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects.

In 2008, she was awarded Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for her service to landscape architecture and urban design as an academic, researcher and practitioner and through contributions to a range of professional organisations and advisory bodies.

In recognition of her distinguished service to scholarship and to QUT, QUT Council has awarded Emeritus Professor Catherin Bull AM Doctor of the University.

Thesis Title

Developing Smart Prisons in The United Arab Emirates

Supervisors

  • Dr Madhav Prasad Nepal  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Bo Xia  (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

This research provides insights into the United Arab Emirates prison issues, evaluates existing smart building technologies, and offers a decision-making model for selecting appropriate smart technologies. Utilizing both qualitative (semi-structured interviews) and quantitative (surveys) research methods, it is found that overcrowding, budget constraints, and outdated infrastructure hinder the adoption of smart building technologies in prisons. A multi-criteria decision-making model was developed using AHP and fuzzy-TOPSIS methods. The findings guide policymakers and stakeholders in enhancing prison conditions, safety, and sustainability, contributing to broader industry advancements.

Thesis Title

Improving Whole Building Life Cycle Assessment Software Tools for Decision-Making.

Supervisors

  • Dr Yan Cheung Cheung  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Robin Michael Drogemuller  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Dr Sara Omrani  (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis explored how environmental impact assessment (EIA) of the whole life cycle of buildings is conducted across all project stages. Since building designers typically rely on software to make decisions, this thesis investigated the attributes that EIA software tools currently have or should have to provide a more comprehensible interface while delivering an accurate and reliable assessment. For this purpose, the research examined existing EIA software and surveyed software developers and users. Ultimately, this research contributes to a more sustainable building industry by guiding the development of EIA tools that effectively inform designers of the best environmental-friendly decisions.

Urban Food Planning in Australia: Enabling and Constraining Factors

Supervisors

  • Professor Douglas Charles Baker  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Karen Juanita Vella  (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

Planning for food and food systems in urban areas has emerged as a new area of planning and policy development over the last two decades. However, its integration with urban planning systems is still limited. Formalised urban food planning is also lacking in Australia. This thesis theoretically examines the development of urban food planning and systematically explores the factors that enable and hinder its integration with Australian planning systems. In doing so, this research advances planning scholarship and urban studies and highlights the urgency of planning integration in the face of rapid urbanisation, globalisation, and climate change.

Improving Mental Health in the Construction Industry

Supervisors

  • Dr Ka Hung Hon  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Nerina Lea Jimmieson  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Kirsten Way  (External Supervisor)
  • Professor Bo Xia  (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

Psychosocial hazards adversely affect the mental health of construction practitioners. However, limited construction studies have examined the effect of the interplay of psychosocial hazards on mental health. This research comprehensively explored the qualitative and quantitative relationships between psychosocial hazards and mental health in the construction industry through meta-analysis, semi-structured interviews, and Bayesian network modelling. The research findings are expected to provide valuable insights for construction practitioners in effectively managing psychosocial hazards and creating mentally healthy workplaces.
