Status & Optimisation of LNG Regasification Value Chain
Supervisors
- Professor Richard John Brown (Principal Supervisor)
- Professor Robert Perrons (Associate Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Thomas James Rainey (Associate Supervisor)
- Professor Theodore Steinberg (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
LNG has become the fastest-growing sector in the international gas trading business, but its promise as a transition fuel has been complicated by accessibility, with rising capital costs associated with delivering LNG projects, Therefore, this investigation's scope is targeted at onshore LNG regasification value chains to identify opportunities for future optimisation and clean energy transition i.e., technology, accessibility, GHG emissions and air pollution. Additionally, it is concluded that lessons learnt from this study need to be factored in planning for hydrogen and liquefied hydrogen value chains.

Mathematical Modeling of a Light Field Fundus Camera and its Applications to Retinal Imaging
Supervisors
- Professor Michael John Collins (Associate Supervisor)
- Professor Jonathan Michael Roberts (Mentoring Supervisor)
- Adjunct Associate Professor Anjali Tumkur Jaiprakash (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
Eye diseases affecting the retina such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma are estimated to cause more than 10 million cases of unaddressed visual impairment. The majority could be resolved if diagnosed early enough, monitored and treated appropriately. This work involves the development of the retinal plenoptoscope, a light field fundus camera that will improve outcomes in retinal screening. Outcomes include: a method for designing a light field fundus camera; basic light field processing techniques for the captured images including rendering, depth mapping, glare reduction and distortion correction; and an example of a clinical application of the camera.

Hybrid Lattice Boltzmann Model for Simulating Viscoelastic Instabilities
Supervisors
- Dr Chris From (External Supervisor)
- Jongyoon Han (External Supervisor)
- Professor Emilie Janette Sauret (Principal Supervisor)
- Professor Yi-Chin Toh (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
The addition of polymers to a solvent significantly alters flow behaviour, leading to viscoelastic fluids that exhibit complex turbulent-like instabilities even without inertia, enabling enhanced microscale mixing capabilities. However, understanding the fundamental features of these instabilities is far from trivial. Equally challenging is the ability to simulate their behaviour numerically. This thesis develops a novel numerical model designed to accurately simulate viscoelastic instabilities by addressing and overcoming some of the long-standing pervasive problems in the numerical viscoelastic research community. The model provides new insights into viscoelastic instabilities and how to exploit these features through porous media for enhanced oil recovery.

Transformation of Aluminosilicate Materials into High Value Zeolites
Supervisors
- Professor Graeme John Millar (Principal Supervisor)
- Professor Richi Nayak (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr John Gregory Outram (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis explored sustainable methods for producing zeolites from waste materials generated by the mining sector. Zeolites are valuable when used as adsorbents, catalysts and molecular sieves. Innovative strategies were developed which not only reduced the costs involved when activating the waste materials but also created co-products which could be used in water and wastewater treatment. This study also highlighted the potential of machine learning to optimise the zeolite synthesis process. By establishing a clean dataset and employing various machine learning algorithms the accuracy was 85% when predicting zeolite synthesis outcomes. These findings offer promising solutions for eco-friendly zeolite production.

Synthesis of High Purity Alumina from Various Aluminium Rich Sources
Supervisors
- Professor Sara Jane Couperthwaite (Associate Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Wayde Neil Martens (Mentoring Supervisor)
- Dr Rachel Anais Pepper (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
With the increased demand for critical mineral, such as high purity alumina, alternative feedstocks that would be typically overlooked are becoming viable alternatives. This thesis addresses the use of aluminium rich sources for the synthesis of high purity alumina. The work shows that the fundamental understanding of aluminium chemistry can allow for different low grade feedstocks and mine waste sources and low grade ores can be successfully used for the synthesis of high purity alumina.

Learning Robotic Manipulation of Deformable Objects in the Real World
Supervisors
- Distinguished Professor Peter Corke (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Fangyi Zhang (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis explores solutions to the challenge of robots manipulating deformable objects such as fabric and ropes. We propose a new approach that learns from real-world data, supplemented by domain knowledge, rather than relying on extensive and time-consuming computer simulations. We can train robots to fold fabric using just one hour of data gathered automatically by a robot. We also introduced a method that allows robots to efficiently learn how to fold or smooth out cloth by observing video demonstrations by humans.

Facial Analysis Models for Face and Facial Expression Recognition
Supervisors
- Professor Clinton Brian Fookes (Principal Supervisor)
- Professor Subramanian Sridharan (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis examines the research and development of new approaches for face and facial expression recognition within the fields of computer vision and biometrics. Expression variation is a challenging issue in current face recognition systems and current approaches are not capable of recognizing facial variations effectively within human-computer interfaces, security and access control applications. This thesis presents new contributions for performing face and expression recognition simultaneously; face recognition in the wild; and facial expression recognition in challenging environments. The research findings include the development of new factor analysis and deep learning approaches which can better handle different facial variations.

Improving Anaerobic Digesters; Synthesis, Design and Application of Zeolite N
Supervisors
- Professor Sara Jane Couperthwaite (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Prasad Kaparaju (External Supervisor)
- Professor Graeme John Millar (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis focussed on optimising the anaerobic digestion of ammonium rich substrates by minimising the risk of ammonia inhibition.A novel approach of implementing ammonium ion selective zeolite N in the anaerobic digestion process was investigated. Due to a lack of commercial availability, synthetic zeolite N synthesis was optimised, a manufacturing process including technoeconomic analysis generated and a novel shaping strategy developed. The novel shaping strategy resulted in a product with maximised performance and high physical properties. The impact of powder and shaped zeolite N on the anaerobic digestion was studied and resulted in 25% enhanced methane production.

Thesis Title
Leveraging Control Priors in Deep Reinforcement Learning for Robotics
Supervisors
- Professor Michael John Milford (Mentoring Supervisor)
- Professor Niko Suenderhauf (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis proposes a series of hybrid approaches to robot control that combine classical control methods and deep reinforcement learning (RL). Classical control methods work well in structured environments, but struggle in unstructured and stochastic situations. RL has the potential to learn complex controllers through trial and error, however, current methods are sample-inefficient and unsafe. The proposed hybrid approaches combine the strengths of both systems, resulting in efficient, reliable, and dexterous decision-making systems for real-world robotics. This is demonstrated through a sequence of four publications, showing that the hybrid approaches outperform either system operating independently.

Process Optimisation for Depolymerisation by Alkali Activation and Synthesis of Zeolite LTA
Supervisors
- Associate Professor Wayde Neil Martens (Associate Supervisor)
- Professor Graeme John Millar (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
While synthetic zeolites, particularly zeolite LTA, hold significant importance in contemporary society, their traditional manufacturing heavily relies on standard laboratory reagents, straining finite resources and imposing a substantial environmental footprint. This Thesis showcases the potential of waste natural zeolite as a cost-effective and abundant raw material for the synthesis of high-quality zeolite LTA. The research within this work not only advances the existing understanding of zeolite chemistry but also illuminates a new green chemistry pathway for the sustainable production of zeolite LTA from a waste material.
