Thesis Title
Understanding Mental Toughness in Women's Australian Rules Football: A Sociocultural, Situational, and Behavioural Examination
Supervisors
- Dr Tristan Jon Coulter (Principal Supervisor)
- Professor Clifford John Mallett (External Supervisor)
- Professor Gene Margaret Moyle (Mentoring Supervisor)
Citation
Mental toughness research previously has been focussed on defining and measuring MT Ð primarily with male participants. This thesis explored the 'meaning' of MT at an AFLW club, the situations that require MT over the course of a football season, and the behaviours that demonstrate MT in a competitive football match. The three studies offer a comprehensive view of MT in women's Australian rules football. Overall, themes of resilience, physical toughness, and caring for teammates characterised MT in women's Australian rules football and were apparent at all levels of investigation.

Thesis Title
The Use of Nutritional Interventions and its Effects on Parameters of Motor Function and Intrinsic Motor Neurone Excitability
Supervisors
- Adjunct Professor Remco Christiaan Johan Polman (Associate Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Gabriel Siqueira Trajano (Principal Supervisor)
- Professor Jolieke van der Pols (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis focussed on determining the effects of two nutritional supplements (caffeine and alpha-lactalbumin) on the ability of our brain to recruit motor neurones, activate muscle contractions, and regulate exercise performance. With the use of high-density electromyography, this project focused on understanding if these accessible nutrition supplements could modify firing patterns of motor neurones whilst performing exercise. The results of this thesis help understand the complex relationship between serotonin, motor neurone firing behaviour, and exercise.

The Development and Validation of Nutrition Assessment Tools to Explore Contributing Factors to Childhood Overweight and Obesity in Urban Vietnam
Supervisors
- Professor Danielle Gallegos (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Smita Nambiar-Mann (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Cuong Quoc Tran (External Supervisor)
- Professor Jolieke van der Pols (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
This research developed and validated nutrition assessment tools for Vietnamese children and explores factors contributing to childhood obesity in urban Vietnam at individual, familial, and societal levels. A higher cardiovascular disease risk can be identified using a BMIz-score of 1 SD and a waist-to-height ratio of 0.5. Items from the Vietnamese Children Short Dietary Questionnaire serve as proxies for estimating fruit, vegetable, dairy, sugar-sweetened beverage, instant noodles, processed meat, snack intake, and watching while eating. The investigation enhances understanding of child characteristics, parental perceptions, and family socioeconomic status linked to childhood obesity in urban Vietnam.

Associations Amongst Metabolic Syndrome, Body Composition, Hematological Parameters and a Low-Calorie Meal Replacement in Healthcare Shift Workers
Supervisors
- Dr Ranil Jayawardena (External Supervisor)
- Professor Neil Anthony King (Principal Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Toby George Pavey (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis examined Sri Lankan healthcare workers to assess the impact of shift work on their metabolic syndrome risk, associated with their lifestyle and body composition. The study also explored the benefits of replacing traditional dinners with a low-calorie meal replacement for obese shift workers. Results showed shift workers had more than twice the risk of developing metabolic syndrome compared to day workers, with extended shift work increasing body fat and white blood cell counts. Those who consumed meal replacements experienced weight loss, and improved biochemical measures, suggesting its potential as an effective workplace weight loss strategy.

Thesis Title
Exploring the Role of Dietary Intake and Supplementation on Performance in Video Gaming and Esports
Supervisors
- Professor Daniel McCarthy Johnson (Associate Supervisor)
- Professor Neil Anthony King (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
Esports, or competitive video gaming, is a rapidly growing global industry. This thesis explored the effect of dietary intake and supplementation on performance in esports. This included current dietary and supplementation behaviour and its relationship with habitual esports play, and the attitudes and beliefs of esports players on the role of diet and supplementation in training and competition. The effectiveness of an acute pre-prandial caffeine dose on in-game esports performance was also assessed. The results demonstrated varied dietary intake and supplement use within the esports population and no consistent effect of caffeine on esports performance.
