Professor Elizabeth Beattie (RN, PhD, FAAN FGSA)
Professor Elizabeth Beattie is a distinguished nurse researcher in psychiatry and gerontology with extensive clinical nursing, curriculum development and teaching expertise. Throughout her career she has worked tirelessly to advocate for and support people with dementia and their families, and forged an international reputation in psychogeriatric nursing, specialising in dementia-related behavioural system aetiology and nonpharmacological intervention development.
Professor Beattie retired from QUT in December 2022 after fifteen years of service.
Prior to her retirement, Professor Beattie was Professor, Aged and Dementia Care in the QUT School of Nursing, a position she held since returning to Australia from the United States in 2008. During her time at QUT she also served as Director of Dementia Collaborative Research Centre: Carers and Consumers (DCRC – CC), and Director of Queensland Dementia Training Australia (formerly Dementia Training Study Centre), based within the School of Nursing.
Through her innovative approach to learning and teaching Professor Beattie made significant contributions to the development of nursing curriculum in Australia, thus helping to build capacity in health care workforces to provide better care and wellbeing for the older people in our communities. With her passion for building nursing excellence, coupled with a generous and astute approach to mentoring fellow staff and PhD students, Professor Beattie’s legacy is many aspiring nurse researchers of dementia care and many others who have gone on to flourish in their own careers.
During her career, Professor Beattie generated 159 peer-reviewed publications, along with many articles in Editor Reviewed Journals, Conference Abstracts, and Book Chapters and has a Scival h-index of 31. She has generated $37M in research income as a nursing academic and, in recent years, has been an Associate Investigator of 2 Centres of Research Excellence NHMRC, totalling approximately $4M.
Professor Beattie is an Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Gerontological Nursing, Research in Gerontological Nursing, the International Journal of Older People Nursing and Frontiers in Dementia.
Professor Beattie continues to enhance the University’s reputation as she stays involved in dementia education and research, particularly through her contributions to the Dementia Australia Research Foundation and in Dementia Training Australia's education programs.
Professor Beattie’s qualifications include a PhD (1997) in Nursing Science from James Cook University and The University of Michigan, a Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies (Sociology/Anthropology/Ageing) (1989) from Macquarie University, in addition to clinical nursing qualifications.
Professor Beattie holds Adjunct or Honorary appointments at the University of Queensland and Pennsylvania State University in the USA. She is a Fellow of Hartford Institute for Gerontological Nursing Research Summer Institute, New York University, and a founding member of the Australian Hartford Consortium for Gerontological Nursing Excellence. Assessing Family Care Needs of Children with Cancer in Thailand: Developing a Thai Version of the Family Inventory of Needs-Paediatric II (FIN-PED II)
Supervisors
- Professor Natalie Katrina Bradford (Associate Supervisor)
- Distinguished Professor Patricia Mary Yates (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis was the first study to develop and test the Thai version of Family Inventory of Need-Paediatric II. The study used an exploratory sequential mixed-method and wasconducted in three phases. The findings are a promising step in the development of a multi-dimensional needs assessment tool that will be useful for researchers, healthcareprofessionals, and policymakers who wish to assess the family care needs of Thai parents with children with cancer.

'It's About the Humanity of Nursing' Shifting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Education Beyond White Possession and Towards a Relational Approach
Supervisors
- Adjunct Professor Mark Kenneth Brough (Associate Supervisor)
- Adjunct Associate Professor Leonie Cox (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis critically explores the experiences of Indigenous and non-Indigenous academics who develop and deliver Indigenous health curricula for nursing disciplines anduniversities, who are committed to better servicing Indigenous peoples. This thesis presents and interprets three central concepts. The notion of ‘never turning off’ highlights theadditional expectations bestowed upon academics teaching Indigenous health. That of ‘white possession’ and its operation, considers standardised frameworks intended tosupport academics, but instead are weaponised against academics to enhance efficiencies. Finally, it interprets how the process of ‘relational engagementsżżż withIndigenous peoples gave strength and protection to the academics.

Scoping Study of Paediatric Peripheral Intravenous Catheter Use, Management Practice, Outcomes, Nurse Expertise, and Carer Experience in Yogyakarta, Indonesia
Supervisors
- Professor Samantha Jane Keogh (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Judith Evelyn Ruth Munday (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
Despite the important function of peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs) for delivery of intravenous therapy, failure and complications in paediatric patients reportedworldwide including Indonesia remain high. Guided by the Donabedian theoretical framework, this thesis comprehensively assessed PIVC practice in Indonesian tertiary andregional hospitals, including usage, management practices, and outcomes, to investigate quality of care and guide future improvement programs. Indicators of good and poorquality paediatric PIVC insertion and maintenance practice were evident. PIVCs are central to modern healthcare, once a PIVC is inserted, optimum efforts should beundertaken to maintain catheter patency and to ensure vessel health preservation.

Exploring Body Morphology, Skin Microcirculation and Microclimate in Patients with Critical Illness
Supervisors
- Adjunct Professor Fiona Maree Coyer (Principal Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Christina Narelle Parker (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This doctoral research explored the association between body morphology, skin microcirculation, and skin microclimate on skin integrity in patients with a critical illness. As aresult of the burden of illness, patients can experience a range of complications, including impaired skin integrity, with subsequent pressure injury development. This researchfound that participants with an overweight and obese body mass index and participants with an inverted triangle body shape were at a greater risk of pressure injurydevelopment. This innovative research considered risk factors for skin vulnerability from a new and person-centred perspective and it has provided direction for future research.

The Kids Pain Collaborative: A Collaborative Implementation Study of Acute Paediatric Pain Care in the Emergency Department
Supervisors
- Professor Clint Douglas (Principal Supervisor)
- Professor Samantha Jane Keogh (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
Pain is a central and distressing experience for children in the emergency department. And too often, children wait in pain. Optimising pain care with frontline teams requirescomplex innovation across whole systems of care to achieve sustainable practice change. This thesis reports a hybrid type 3 implementation-effectiveness study co-designedand facilitated by an authentic clinical/academic research partnership – the Kids Pain Collaborative - to transform pain care in a major Australian paediatric ED. A complexmodel of internal/external facilitation was pivotal in transforming pain care practice and enabling a culture where it is not ok to wait in pain.
