Thesis Title

Consumer Engagement and E-Marketing in the MENA Region: Fossicking Social Media Effects

Supervisors

  • Dr Lars Eric Isaksson  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Edwina Merilyn Luck  (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

This study investigates the effects of the dimensions of Uses and Gratifications Theory (UGT) on Consumer Engagement (CE) on social media platforms in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Employing a mixed-methods approach, this research focuses on the cases of Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Egypt. The findings indicate that the UGT dimensions of entertainment, trendiness, sharing, information, and remuneration have a significant impact on CE, whereas customisation and interaction do not exhibit a significant influence.

Thesis Title

When Looks Matter: Errors in Decision-Making in the Health and Fitness Industry in a World of Asymmetric Information and Bounded Rationality

Supervisors

  • Brad Humphreys  (External Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Robert Robergs  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Benno Torgler  (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

The determinants of decision-making errors in the health and fitness industry are interrogated, where consumers select trainers, often using beauty as a proxy for quality, causing injury. I develop and apply Akerlof's "market for lemons” and Simon’s bounded rationality theories, using originally constructed Instagram data for trainers and from a classroom experiment. I find that sexualised trainers attract more followers regardless of qualifications, potentially harming clients, but this is contingent upon the decision-making environment. This suggests that improved regulation and decision-making environments mitigate these errors, enhancing the quality of health and fitness services, reducing injuries, improving consumers’ and social wellbeing.

Uplifting the Ultra Poor Through Transfer Program: Evidence from Bangladesh

Supervisors

  • Associate Professor Changxia Ke  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Dipanwita Sarkar  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Jayanta Sarkar  (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

The thesis focuses on the effects of a targeted transfer program on social, economic and behavioural outcomes of the rural ultra‑poor in Bangladesh. In a unique contribution, this thesis combines secondary data from a large scale randomised controlled trial with primary experimental data. Using rigorous econometric methods, the research provides the first‑of‑its‑kind causal evidence that the transfer to ultra‑poor women improves their children’s occupational and educational outcomes in the long‑run, and promotes patience, risk‑tolerance and socio‑economic empowerment among the women. This work highlights that a targeted anti‑poverty intervention may confer far‑reaching behavioural, social and labour market benefits, with significant policy implications.

Thesis Title

Systemically Important Bank Bond Funding: Implications for Financial Stability

Supervisors

  • Professor Adam Edmond Clements  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Dr Katherine Maree Uylangco  (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis explores bond funding activities of Systemically Important Banks (SIBs). Following the GFC, large banks were identified as SIBs by regulators. If one of these large banks fail it would pose a systemic risk to the stability of the economy. This is the first study to focus on bond funding for SIBs and the potential impacts to financial stability. Using cross-sectional data, the thesis analyses bond funding in primary markets, including Australia, across three studies. The empirical findings make original contributions to existing literature and provide insights to regulators setting local and global financial stability policy.

Thesis Title

Utilising Hedonic Modelling for Analysing Property Market Behaviour and Policy Decision Making

Supervisors

  • Dr Andrea Gaye Blake  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Viet Ngu Hoang  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Clevo Wilson  (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis provides an in-depth analysis of consumer behaviour in the Australian property market, focusing on the influences of natural disasters, cultural beliefs, and negative externalities. Utilising the well-established Hedonic Pricing Model (HPM) in economics, combined with innovative modelling and analytical tools, the research quantifies the effects of insurance embargoes, superstitious beliefs, and transportation noise on property prices. The findings offer valuable insights into how these factors shape market dynamics and property valuation in Australia.

Into the Deep: An Exploration of Deepfake as an Innovation for Marketing Communication

Supervisors

  • Dr Jan Kietzmann  (External Supervisor)
  • Adjunct Associate Professor Kate Renee Letheren  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Rory Francis Mulcahy  (External Supervisor)
  • Adjunct Professor Rebekah Russell‑Bennett  (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

Marketers are beginning to adopt AI-facilitated deepfake marketing communications, however, deepfakes can be perceived as deceptive by consumers and potentially damaging to marketing practice. This thesis by publication synthesises a new definition of deepfakes as a communications tool that is neither good or bad, and also proposes that deepfakes can both benefit and harm marketing practice, customers, and organisations. This research provides new evidence indicating that the extent to which a deepfake-altered advertisement looks realistic, in addition to whether and how deepfake alteration is disclosed, influences whether the psychological processing of a deepfake-altered advertisement is positive or negative.

Thesis Title

Advancing Volatility Prediction: Exploring Directional Forecasts, Measures of Volatility, and Asset Allocation Strategies

Supervisors

  • Professor Adam Edmond Clements  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Dr Stephen Robert Thiele  (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis addresses the challenge of forecasting financial asset volatility, a crucial factor in asset pricing and risk management. It applies a mix of conventional and novel statistical methods to improve volatility predictions. It encompasses the accuracy of directional forecasts, the reliability of realised volatility measures, the efficacy of various asset allocation strategies based on volatility timing, and the effectiveness of range-based models in low-frequency scenarios. The findings of this thesis hold practical relevance for market practitioners, and provide insightful solutions for asset pricing and risk management.
