Thesis Title

Developing Smart Prisons in The United Arab Emirates

Supervisors

  • Dr Madhav Prasad Nepal  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Bo Xia  (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

This research provides insights into the United Arab Emirates prison issues, evaluates existing smart building technologies, and offers a decision-making model for selecting appropriate smart technologies. Utilising both qualitative (semi-structured interviews) and quantitative (surveys) research methods, it is found that overcrowding, budget constraints, and outdated infrastructure hinder the adoption of smart building technologies in prisons. A multi-criteria decision-making model was developed using AHP and fuzzy-TOPSIS methods. The findings guide policymakers and stakeholders in enhancing prison conditions, safety, and sustainability, contributing to broader industry advancements.

Thesis Title

Impact of Gradual Step Changes in Temperature on Thermal Comfort in Hot Climates

Supervisors

  • Professor Robin Michael Drogemuller  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Madhav Prasad Nepal  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Dr Kirsty Michelle Volz  (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This research investigates the effects of gradual step changes in temperature of 3 degree Celsius on occupants’ thermal comfort when they transition from extreme external temperature and humidity through transitional spaces to destination spaces in the building. The study shows that a gradual change in temperature does not cause any discomfort in the transitional space, but a noticeable improvement in the occupants’ thermal comfort is, however, realised in the destination spaces, where occupants spend most of the time in the building. The study outcomes have significance in informing sustainable design and operations of buildings in the arid regions.

Thesis Title

Bridging Theory and Practice: Exploring Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) in Architecture from the Profession's Perspective

Supervisors

  • Associate Professor Lindy‑Lou Burton  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Jennifer Clifton  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Philip Crowther  (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

This research investigates differing perceptions and expectations between universities and architectural practices regarding skills to best prepare graduates for practice. This research proposes that Work-integrated Learning (WIL) experiences offer opportunities to bridge theory and practice. Through understanding the needs of WIL stakeholders: universities, students, and architecture practice, this research recommends strategies to bring the different worlds of universities and practice together for a shared vision of WIL in architectural education. This research addresses industry and governments’ expectations for graduates to be practice ready and reports on the benefits of WIL for all stakeholders.

Thesis Title

Developing Open Innovation Strategies to Foster Green Manufacturing and Digital Transformation

Supervisors

  • Professor Glenda Amayo Caldwell  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Gregory Neil Hearn  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Cori Anne Stewart  (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis explores open innovation strategies for enhancing green manufacturing and digital transformation in small and mid-size enterprises (SMEs), aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goal 9 and Industry 4.0 imperatives. Employing a multiple case-study approach involving three SME manufacturers from diverse sectors, data was gathered through observations, interviews, and workshops. Thematic analysis identified key priorities, barriers, and challenges. Subsequently, a workshop generated tailored open innovation strategies, with implementation recommendations provided. The research outcomes aim to benefit the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing Hub ecosystem and have broader applicability across the global SME manufacturing landscape.

Thesis Title

The Role of Demand Flexibility Trading in Australia’s Clean Energy Transition: A Systems Thinking Approach

Supervisors

  • Professor Marcus Foth  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Lei Liu  (External Supervisor)
  • Adjunct Associate Professor Wendy Miller  (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

The thesis analyses the transition of Australia's electricity system to clean energy technologies such as rooftop solar. It develops a scenario model of a future demand flexibility market design and evaluates its feasibility by interviewing energy experts. Findings demonstrate how a systems thinking approach can be used to address the limitations of the scenario model. It identifies critical energy policy design improvements such as how a market can create investment environments for business model and technology innovation. The thesis advocates for using systems thinking as a method in energy market reform and clean energy transition policy design practice.

Exploring How the Living Environment Affects the Well-Being of Older People in Chinese Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs)

Supervisors

  • Martin Skitmore  (External Supervisor)
  • Dr Kirsty Michelle Volz  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Bo Xia  (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

This project conducted a thorough investigation of the living environment in Chinese Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs). It examined how the complex living environment as a system affects the overall well-being of CCRC residents using Bayesian Network modelling. It offers insights into China’s evolving response to the challenges of rapid ageing and the transformation of care for older adults, contributing a valuable Chinese perspective to the development of global strategies for better accommodating and caring for older people.

Abandoned Industrial Space in Chongqing, China: Significance, Meaning, and Management

Supervisors

  • Dr Simone Brott  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Mirko Guaralda  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Dr Daniel Owuor Nyandega  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Bing Zhang  (External Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis examines abandoned industrial spaces in Chongqing city centre, China. A new model for industrial derelict spaces in Chongqing was developed, which explicitly examined these derelict spaces in terms of development, heritage, and identity as fundamental to the revitalisation of the city centre. The model can provide critical support in recreating a strong identity, sense of place, and aesthetics for other Chinese cities that are rapidly de-industrialising.

Drivers’ Parking Behaviour Around Hospitals: An Australian Study

Supervisors

  • Dr Behrang Assemi  (External Supervisor)
  • Professor Douglas Charles Baker  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor William Vaughan Coffey  (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

The review of parking literature indicates that parking choice is an under-researched area. As there is a scarcity of studies in this area, the author was motivated to concentrate on both latent and observable factors of parking behaviours and choices. This research aims to explain and predict drivers’ WTP for parking by considering variables that are defined in the literature such as non-observable (latent) variables (psychological variables) and observable variables, which influence the WTP of short-term drivers (less than 24 hours) on both off-street and kerbside parking, around hospitals in different locations outside of the Central Business District (CBD).
