Thesis Title

Unsuccessful Ageing: Marginalising Constructions of Dementia in Australian Public & Legal Aged Care Discourse

Supervisors

  • Professor Shih Ning Then  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Kieran Mark Tranter  (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis is a study of dementia narratives in Australian public and legal aged care discourse, namely in aged care stakeholder online documents and the Final Report of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety. It reveals how contemporary representations of an idealised active and independent ‘successful’ older age frame dementia as the outcome of ‘failed’ or ‘unsuccessful’ ageing. In doing so, these representations contribute to marginalisation of people living with dementia as the antithesis of successful ageing through ongoing practices of dehumanisation, stigmatisation, exclusion and harm in the Australian aged care system.

Thesis Title

Social Media Misconduct Dismissals in South Africa: Forms of Hate Speech in First-Instance Employment Decisions

Supervisors

  • Professor Anna Louise Huggins  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Kieran Mark Tranter  (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis examines what first-instance social media misconduct dismissals decisions reveal about hate speech in contemporary South African workspaces. It finds racialised hate to be a significant form of hate speech that materialises in textual (words), non-textual (images) and meta-textual modes within social media discourse in contemporary South African workspaces. In doing so, this thesis expands understanding the nexus between social media, employment law and the modes of racialised meaning-making circulating in online workspaces in South Africa, thereby contributing towards ‘de-westernising’ social media dismissal scholarship by extending its horizons to the context of the Sub-Saharan Global South.

Thesis Title

Patients and Family Caregivers as 'Regulatory Actors' in Voluntary Assisted Dying Systems: A Qualitative Study in Australia and Canada

Supervisors

  • Dr Eliana Louise Close  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Benjamin Peter White  (Mentoring Supervisor)
  • Professor Lindy Willmott  (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis by published papers takes a novel approach to examining regulation of Australian and Canadian voluntary assisted dying (‘VAD’) systems. It examines patients’ and family caregivers’ role in influencing VAD systems and argues that some patients and family caregivers should be conceived of as “regulatory actors”. Where they are behaving as regulatory actors because they want to or are supported by the system, this is positive. However, where patients and family caregivers are acting out of necessity to address identified system issues, it is incumbent on other actors (such as governments) to take action to address system issues.

Thesis Title

Boosting Sustainable Entrepreneurship in the Australian Automotive Industry. Designing and Leveraging External Enablers

Supervisors

  • Professor Per Davidsson  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Distinguished Professor Dietmar Hutmacher  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Adjunct Professor Martin Obschonka  (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis examines Australia’s underdeveloped auto recycling industry using mixed-method research and the External Enabler framework. It highlights the role of regulations, technology, and sociocultural trends in fostering sustainability but emphasises the need for stronger regulatory measures. A conjoint experiment identifies optimal policy measures, offering practical solutions for a viable auto plastic recycling industry and contributing to sustainability entrepreneurship research.

Thesis Title

The Presumption of Beneficence: Will Genetic Enhancement Contribute to Human Well-Being?

Supervisors

  • Dr Samuel Thomas Boyle  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Andrew John McGee  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Shih Ning Then  (Mentoring Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis challenges the prevailing assumption in enhancement literature that genetic enhancements are morally permissible because they are normatively beneficial. It reviews philosophical theories of well-being and adopts a theory of well-being as authentic happiness. It then applies this theory of well-being and argues, by analogy with cosmetic enhancements, that when people are manipulated to conform to oppressive norms, those people are not authentically valuing genetic enhancements. Given the systemic presence of oppressive manipulation, genetic enhancements do not categorically contribute to authentic happiness. Thus, we cannot categorically claim genetic enhancements are beneficial and therefore morally permissible.

Thesis Title

How Can Digitalisation Enable the Transition to a Circular Economy?

Supervisors

  • Professor Yvonne Leonie Barner  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Sandra Filipa De Caires Figueira De Oliveira  (External Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Shane William Mathews  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Adjunct Associate Professor Rui Torres De Oliveira  (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

Our world faces a planetary crisis, resulting in pollution, resource scarcity, and biodiversity loss. This thesis explores the transition to a circular economy and the enabling role of Industry 4.0 technologies, through a systematic literature review and case studies from Europe and Australia. A high-level transition framework is proposed, including three stages: transition, implementation, and optimisation. The findings highlight the iterative nature of the transition, roles of institutions and economics, and warrant looking beyond carbon and material-focused solutions. This research provides strategic tools for businesses and policymakers to promote circular economy adoption and it highlights systemic complexities and potential paradoxes.
