An Ethnography of Digital Marketing and Sports Betting Consumption Practices: Implications for Harm, Marketing Regulation, and Programmatic Intervention Approaches
Supervisors
- Adjunct Professor Ross Gordon (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Lauren Gurrieri (External Supervisor)
- Dr Theresa Harada (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
The gambling industry is on a substantial growth trajectory. However gambling is a risky and potentially harmful consumption practice. There is concern in Australia and globally about online gambling harm and the role of digital marketing in gambling harm, awareness about disconnected gambling marketing policy and regulation, and attention to how to appropriately address gambling harm. This dissertation offers an ethnographic investigation into how sports betting consumption practices are shaped by digital marketing and the implications for harm, providing theoretical and practical contributions in the areas of consumption practices, digital marketing, and gambling/sports betting.

The Persuasiveness of Travel Influencers in Sustainable Tourism
Supervisors
- Associate Professor Udo Rainer Gottlieb (Associate Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Lisa Schuster (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
Increasing environmental awareness has led to a rise in sustainable travel influencers promoting eco-friendly travel options, but research on their effectiveness in encouraging sustainable destination choices remains limited. This study explores the influence of sustainable travel influencers in promoting eco-friendly destinations. Using a mixed-method approach, including interviews and surveys with followers, it examines influencers' and their contents' key characteristics. The findings highlight authenticity, credibility, perceived attractiveness, and environmental and social concern as important characteristics. Additionally, a balanced mix of informative and entertaining content, with impartial reviews of sustainable destinations, enhances persuasiveness, offering insights for tourism organisations in selecting influencers.

Thesis Title
How Gamification Motivates Healthy Eating in Young Consumers: Understanding the Role of Psychological Needs and Ownership
Supervisors
- Professor Byron William Keating (Mentoring Supervisor)
- Dr Shasha Wang (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis tackles the challenge of motivating young consumers to adopt healthy eating through the use of gamification in nutrition apps. By applying theories of self-determination and psychological ownership, the findings show that incorporating competence-supportive gamification features that satisfy consumers' psychological needs and foster a sense of psychological ownership and internalization can make these apps more effective. This research contributes to the field of marketing, particularly in advancing the understanding of gamified marketing communication and consumer psychology. It also offers practical implications, focusing on designing motivational gamification and enhancing the effectiveness of marketing communications in health contexts.

Service Robots in the Wild: The Impact of the Robotic-Human Intrusion Challenge on FLE Well-Being
Supervisors
- Adjunct Associate Professor Kate Renee Letheren (Associate Supervisor)
- Dominik Mahr (External Supervisor)
- Gaby Odekerken (External Supervisor)
- Adjunct Professor Rebekah Russell Bennett (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
As service industries navigate extreme staff shortages, service robots have been identified as a way to mitigate this difficulty. This thesis investigates how the integration of service robots in frontline service environments affects the well-being of frontline employees who must work alongside them in aged care and hospitality. By leveraging novel field data, this research reveals that service robots augment rather than replace human skills and pose opportunity rather than threat. This thesis envisions a robotic-human future where robots and service workers work to their strengths, and provides guidance for real world implementation.

What Influences the Dyadic Relationship Between the Nonprofit CEO and Board Chair that Drives Fundraising and Mission
Supervisors
- Professor Cameron Newton (Associate Supervisor)
- Adjunct Associate Professor Wendy Adair Scaife (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
The thesis reported on the dyadic relationship between the CEO and board chair in Australian charities to determine how that relationship drives fundraising. It suggests an adaptation of Leader-Member Exchange Theory to Leader-Leader Exchange acknowledging the shared leadership roles of the CEO and board. Key findings were: Fundraising oriented leadership by the CEO is needed to drive fundraising effectively; Fundraising oriented leadership by the board is needed to drive fundraising effectively; and the CEO-board chair relationship can drive fundraising and mission and is more important than the individual CEO and board role.
