Honorary Doctorate Awardee

Adjunct Professor Veronica Casey

Adjunct Professor Veronica Casey AM is a distinguished leader in nursing who is nationally and internationally recognised for excellence in establishing clinical standards, patient care and nursing education. Her long career has been dedicated to continuous improvement and innovation in the nursing and midwifery professions.

She recently retired from Metro South Health Queensland, the provider of public and specialist health care in the Brisbane south side, Logan City, Redland City and Scenic Rim Region, with more than 13,000 employees. She had been Executive Director of Nursing and Midwifery since 2007 and prior to that had served in a range of executive leadership positions, since 1997.

Notable accomplishments include: guiding the Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) redesignation under the Magnet® credentialing program; the introduction of the Nurse Sensitive Indicator performance monitoring system; and leadership of Metro South Health’s Addiction and Mental Health, Logan Bayside and QEII Hospital's 'Pathways to Excellence' credentialing program journey. These initiatives were the first of their type in Australia, positioning PAH as the first hospital in Australia, and one of the first outside the United States, to achieve the highest standards of nursing excellence, measured by a range of indicators relating to patient outcomes and nursing recruitment, retention, and innovation.

As Chair of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia for almost 6 years, Adjunct Professor Casey has also led major regulatory reforms of the nursing and midwifery professions, thus ensuring that Australia is recognised as having one of the world-leading regulatory models ensuring safety for the Australian public. She will continue to serve as Chair of this Board in her retirement.

Adjunct Professor Casey has a long-standing connection with QUT, with ties back to the Queensland Institute of Technology where in 1987 she received a Diploma of Applied Science in Nursing Management. Since 2004, she has been Adjunct Professor with the QUT School of Nursing, lending her expertise in collaborations on publications, clinical partnerships and research. In retirement she will continue to contribute to a range of activities in the School of Nursing, including as mentor and teacher of academic staff and students.

Adjunct Professor Casey’s outstanding contributions have garnered many prestigious accolades, including the Association of Queensland Nursing and Midwifery Leaders Outstanding Achievement Award (2020), Award of Member of the Order of Australia (AM) (2019), Queensland Premiers Leadership Award (2014), and Queensland Health Australia Day Achievement Award (2010).

In 2018 she was named the QUT Faculty of Health Outstanding Alumni Award Winner, in recognition of her advocacy for the nursing profession.

In addition to the Diploma of Applied Science in Nursing Management (1987) from Queensland Institute of Technology, Adjunct Professor Casey’s qualifications include: Bachelor of Nursing (1992); Graduate Diploma in Nursing (1996); and Master of Nursing (Leadership) (1999), all awarded by the Australian Catholic University.

In recognition of her distinguished service to QUT, scholarship, and the community, QUT Council has awarded Adjunct Professor Casey AM Doctor of the University.

Thesis Title

Assessment of Immunotherapy-Related Adverse Events Among Patients with Cancer in Saudi Arabia: A Mixed Methods Study

Supervisors

  • Professor Kimberly Elizabeth Alexander  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Alison Pauline Bowers  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Natalie Katrina Bradford  (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis contributes significantly to cancer care by focusing on patients undergoing immunotherapy in Saudi Arabia. It is the first study to explore the challenges these patients face, offering valuable insights into their experiences. The research translated and validated an immunotherapy assessment tool and assessed its real-world use by evaluating its acceptability, feasibility, and clinical utility. This study deepens the understanding of immune-related adverse events and provides critical perspectives for clinicians, patients, and researchers. Ultimately, it contributes to improving the management of adverse events in cancer immunotherapy.

An Exploration of Discharge Planning Practices in a Hospital in Indonesia

Supervisors

  • Emeritus Professor Helen Ethel Edwards  (External Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Sandra Elvira Johnston  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Christina Narelle Parker  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Carol Anne Windsor  (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

Effective discharge planning for patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and families to enable continued care at home is critical. This research conceptualised DM discharge planning in the Indonesian context from the perspectives of nurses. The results found that most nurses had positive perceptions of the practice of DM discharge planning. Nonetheless, several personal, structural and system barriers hindered discharge planning practices. Findings point to ongoing social processes and interactions in constructing and reconstructing practices around DM discharge planning. The intricacy of broader political, economic, social contexts, medical dominance, and standardisation shaped DM discharge planning practices in a hospital setting.

Thesis Title

Development of a Telehealth Guideline and Evaluation of the Feasibility of a Telehealth Intervention to Facilitate Foot Self-Care Behaviour Among Adults with Type II Diabetes in Nepal

Supervisors

  • Professor Clint Douglas  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Kathleen Joy Finlayson  (External Supervisor)
  • Adjunct Associate Professor Niall Seamus Higgins  (External Supervisor)
  • Niall Higgins  (External Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Christina Narelle Parker  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Dr Matina Sayami  (External Supervisor)

Citation

This research study developed a telehealth guideline for diabetes care and evaluated a telehealth intervention to facilitate foot self-care behaviour among adults with diabetes in Nepal. This was the first telehealth guideline developed specifically for people with diabetes in Nepal. The guideline was developed through a comprehensive process, ensuring the incorporation of evidence-based information for diabetes care. The intervention was designed based on the guideline with the aim of improving foot self-care behaviour. The feasibility outcomes of this study concluded that telehealth can increase accessibility and utilisation of diabetes foot care, a neglected area of healthcare in Nepal.
