Thesis Title

Interaction Opportunities Meaning-Making with Interactive Visualisations

Supervisors

  • Dr Andrew Peter Gibson  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor David Roger Lovell  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Jillian Ellen Willis  (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

Visualisations have long been used to convey information by mapping data to visual elements, often assuming meaning is inherent in these visual properties. However, this perspective overlooks the impact of a meaning-maker’s context, which is unpredictable and cannot be predetermined by designers in advance.  Building on theory which foregrounds meaning-making as a negotiation between meaning-maker and visual properties, this thesis contributes ‘Interaction Opportunities’ which require designers to consider negotiation of meaning in interactive visualisation design.

Thesis Title

Big Picture, Big Sound: Investigating Headphone and Loudspeaker Frameworks to Enhance Users' Sense of Presence and Emotional State in Virtual Reality

Supervisors

  • Professor Damian John Candusso  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Selen Turkay  (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

It could be said that virtual reality provides a 'big picture' right in front of our eyes, but the same currently cannot be said for 'big sound' right next to our ears. Therefore, this thesis investigated the use a novel audio playback method to enhance user experiences in virtual reality (VR) environments to achieve the combination of ‘big picture, big sound’. The results from this research could inform future design decisions and enhance the effectiveness of VR-based applications.

Thesis Title

Virtual Journeys in Rehabilitation: Enhancing User Motivation through Virtual Reality

Supervisors

  • Professor Daniel McCarthy Johnson  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Selen Turkay  (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

'Virtual Journeys in Rehabilitation: Enhancing User Motivation Through Virtual Reality' focuses on enhancing motivation in burn survivors through a virtual reality application designed for rehabilitation. The research integrates human-computer interaction and serious games to create engaging VR experiences. It covers the design, development, and evaluation of a VR prototype called 'Therapy Travels', incorporating feedback from stakeholders and experimental studies. The thesis offers design recommendations for VR rehabilitation tools, emphasising the importance of motivation in burn injury rehabilitation and providing insights into the specific needs of burn survivors.

Decentralised Blockchain Storage Solution: Scalable and Secure Optimisation Scheme for Efficient Data Management

Supervisors

  • Dr Ali Dorri  (External Supervisor)
  • Professor Raja Jurdak  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Dr Gowri Sankar Ramachandran  (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

As blockchain is an immutable, distributed, and decentralized ledger, blockchain full nodes face challenges related to the tremendous data size and the lack of verification of their local ledgers. This research introduces novel Proof-of-Storage solutions for blockchain full nodes, along with storage optimisation strategies aimed at reducing replicas and the overall ledger size. The Proof-of-Storage solutions can enhance the security and decentralisation of blockchain full nodes, minimising performance degradation through the use of an asymmetric encoding and decoding scheme. Meanwhile, the storage optimisation solutions can significantly reduce the number of replicas and provide a secure method for updating the ledger.

Thesis Title

Information Enaction: An Experiential Account of Information

Supervisors

  • Professor Peter David Bruza  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Gregory Francis Thompson  (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis examines how we understand information through examining how we experience it. Using a novel approach that integrates the enactive, cognitive, and embodied aspects of human experience, this thesis proposes the concept of ‘Information Enaction’ in answer to the ontological question of what information experience ‘is’. Heidegger’s Modes of Encounter are extended to empirically explore Information Enaction using narrative and mindfulness in phenomenological inquiry. This thesis is timely given the pervasiveness and significance of information in our everyday lives, the diversity and complexity of experience, and the complex and constantly shifting contemporary information landscape.

Thesis Title

A Conceptualisation of Process Mining Impacts

Supervisors

  • Associate Professor Wasana Bandara  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Sander Jacobus Johannes Leemans  (External Supervisor)
  • Professor Moe Kyaw Wynn  (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

This study investigates the impact of process mining in organisations. Process mining techniques extract insights from event logs to facilitate business process improvement, enhancing operational efficiency and resilience. Despite increased interest, there seems to be a lack of frameworks that identify and categorise impacts. This study identifies key impact categories, success factors and their interrelationships. Through qualitative analysis of case reports, case studies and expert interviews, the study develops models for process mining impacts and process mining success factors. It also emphasises the need for a structured approach and change management to achieve impacts at both process and organisational levels.

Thesis Title

Scalable Machine Learning Methods and Datasets for Software Vulnerability Detection

Supervisors

  • Associate Professor Wayne Anthony Kelly  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Yi Lu  (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis presents two novel methods that utilize machine learning models to identify the presence and types of security vulnerabilities in computer programs. To address the scarcity of high-quality datasets in this domain, a new dataset was created based on real-world, open-source software covering a wide range of vulnerability types labelled by humans. The machine learning models were trained and evaluated on this dataset, with our method achieving higher detection rates when compared to other published work and static analysis techniques, demonstrating an improvement in vulnerability detection systems.
