Aunty Denise Proud
Aunty Denise Proud is a revered Aboriginal Elder, educator and early childhood professional, whose tireless advocacy for cultural awareness and First Nations knowledges has inspired generations. Her deep wisdom, nurturing spirit, and unwavering commitment to empowering community have earned her profound respect and admiration across Australia.
Born in Wakka Wakka country, Cherbourg, Queensland, Aunty Denise has been an early childhood professional for nearly 50 years, championing access, education and participation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.
At 16, she established and led the first kindergarten in Cherbourg, training other staff and building parents’ awareness of the importance of early childhood education and care (ECEC). Over the decades she has worked in multiple ECEC settings, in First Nations communities and inner-city Brisbane. She was awarded life membership of Creche and Kindergarten (C&K) Queensland in 2018.
Aunty Denise has had a long association with QUT. In 1979 she completed the innovative Associate Diploma of Childcare at the University’s predecessor institution the Brisbane Kindergarten Teachers’ College. Today she continues to contribute to the work of the Faculty of Creative Industries, Education and Social Justice across multiple academic domains, including as a mentor; guest lecturer in initial teacher education programs; continuing professional education activities; and as Senior Research Assistant and collaborator on research projects. Aunty Denise is also a member of the QUT-hosted Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence (CoE) for the Digital Child and is a regular contributor to CoE and Partner events.
Aunty Denise is a long-serving member of Early Childhood Australia (ECA), and, in 2023, received the Barbara Creaser award for leadership and service in ECEC. She is a regular contributor to ECA reconciliation events and professional learning activities and is a member of the Board of Reconciliation Queensland. She is also a sought-after speaker, with an impressive list of publications and presentations.
Aunty Denise Proud is an Honorary Senior Fellow of the University of Sunshine Coast and an Honorary Research Fellow of the University of Queensland.
In recognition of her distinguished service to QUT, scholarship, and the community, QUT Council has awarded Aunty Denise Proud Doctor of the University.

Thesis Title
Aspirations Through Time: The Transition Planning Experiences of Students with Disability in Queensland Schools
Supervisors
- Professor Suzanne Barbara Carrington (Associate Supervisor)
- Professor Linda Jayne Graham (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
This multicase longitudinal study investigated the postschool transition planning experiences of students with disability in regular schools in Queensland, Australia. Using the concept of capacity to aspire, it examined how sociocultural norms shape students' aspirations through time. Data from students, parents, and schools highlighted that views about disability, policies, and school processes impact students' transition planning experiences and post-school directions. The findings raise various implications for education policy and practice in Australia.

Thesis Title
Examining Inclusive Education of Minority Children in Indonesia
Supervisors
- Professor Marilyn Anne Campbell (Associate Supervisor)
- Professor Jenna Kathleen Gillett Swan (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis examined the inclusive education of minority children in Indonesia. Minority children included children from religious and ethnic minorities, children with disability and indigenous children. Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory guided the thesis. A multilevel mixed-methods research design was employed, involving data collection through surveys, document analysis, and interviews with school principals, teachers, and children from both minority and non-minority groups. Drawing data from primary schools in Indonesia, the experiences of children from minority groups in schools and the classroom practices of the teachers, families’ perspective and the government’s policies on inclusive education of minority children were described.

Thesis Title
The Impact of Accessible Pedagogies on the Classroom Experiences and Engagement of Students with Language and/or Attentional Difficulties
Supervisors
- Ms Gaenor Dixon (External Supervisor)
- Professor Linda Jayne Graham (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Callula Killingly (Associate Supervisor)
- Adjunct Associate Professor Naomi Sweller (External Supervisor)
Citation
Students with disabilities impacting language and information processing are present in all classrooms, but often do not receive adjustments, making them wholly reliant on the accessibility of classroom instruction. This mixed-methods study investigated the classroom experiences and engagement of 59 Year 10 students with language and/or attentional difficulties before and after selected English teachers participated in Accessible Pedagogies, a program of professional learning designed to enhance the accessibility of classroom teaching. Students of teachers who participated in Accessible Pedagogies reported increased focus, comprehension, and cognitive engagement. No change was observed in students whose teachers did not participate.
