Mr Archie Moore
Archie Moore is one of Australia’s most significant contemporary artists, whose thought-provoking works challenge perceptions of identity, culture, and history. His deeply reflective and imaginative approach has made him a celebrated force in the art world.
A Kamilaroi/Bigambul man of the Darling Downs region of Queensland, and graduate of QUT Bachelor of Visual Arts, Mr Moore’s practice is embedded in Indigenous politics and wider concerns of racism and cultural borders. His artworks often explore language and other cultural tokens as signifiers that can be confused and misinterpreted.
He has worked with a variety of mediums in his portrayals of the self and national histories, and experiments with painting, photography, sculpture, installation, and performance.
For almost two decades, Mr Moore has held regular solo exhibitions at universities, not-for-profit and commercial galleries across Australia and has presented at shows around the world including in China, France, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Mr Moore has also represented Australia at many international exhibitions, including the 20th Biennale of Sydney (2015); Defying Empire; National Indigenous Triennial – National Gallery of Australia (and touring, 2017- 2018); Mémoires Vives: Une Histoire de l’Art Aborigène at Le Musée d’Aquitaine in Bordeaux, France, and Lie of the Land: New Australian Landscape at the Australian Embassy in Washington D.C. In 2001 he was awarded the Millennial Anne & Gordon Samstag International Visual Arts Scholarship which enabled him to study at Akademie Výtvarných Umění v Praze - The Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.
His work has featured prominently and repeatedly in journals both in Australia and internationally including the prestigious, London-based Frieze magazine and the New York-based Art Forum.
A notable installation is United Neytions - commissioned in 2018 as the inaugural partnership between Sydney Airport and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia. This permanent installation in the T1 International Marketplace at Sydney Airport explores themes of identity, nationhood, falsehoods, and authenticity. It also draws attention to the histories, voices, and presence of local Indigenous people on whose traditional lands the airport lies.
At the La Biennale de Venezia 2024, Mr Moore’s exhibition kith and kin at the Australia Pavilion was awarded the prestigious Golden Lion for Best National Participation, the first time in history an Australian artist has received this accolade.
In 2018 Mr Moore was named the QUT Creative Industries Faculty Outstanding Alumni Award Winner, in recognition of his contributions to art and culture. His work Dermis (2012) is included in the QUT Museum collection.
Mr Moore’s qualifications include Certificate in Art and Design, Gateway TAFE (1991) and Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts), QUT (1998).
In recognition of his distinguished service to QUT and the community, QUT Council has awarded Archie Moore Doctor of the University.

Supervisors
- Associate Professor Phoebe Hart (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Stephanie Hutchison (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Philipa Rothfield (External Supervisor)
Citation
Locating Choreographic Empowerment With Soft Participation explores dance's impact on the well-being of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) and LGBT+ communities. This research includes live dance works and films that examine choreography's potential to empower performers and spectators through Maximising Kinaesthesia and Skinner Release Technique. A contextual review of Street, Queer, and contemporary dance pedagogies, influenced by Philipa Rothfield’s philosophy of the Corporeal Uncanny, leads to the concept of Soft Participation. This concept fosters a flow state that Holds Time, creating cultural intimacy between audience and performer, as advocated in the Perhaps… manifesto.

One Tattoo, Two Worlds: Unexplored stories of non-Indigenous Samoan women and Indigenous Samoan Fa’afafine with the malu
Supervisors
- Associate Professor Phoebe Hart (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Leah King Smith (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
One Tatau, Two Worlds: Unexplored Stories of non-Indigenous Samoan Women and Indigenous Samoan Fa’afafine with the Malu, aims to examine how the Samoan malu has integrated non-Indigenous Samoan women and Indigenous Samoan Fa’afafine into the Samoan culture. Malu means protected or sheltered, a traditional tatau (tattoo) that is reserved for High Chiefs' daughters, has now become a symbol for non-Indigenous Samoan Women and Fa’afafine. This is a creative-practice led research and thesis that is visualised in a documentary called One Tatau, Two Worlds (2024), currently showing in film festivals.

A New Values-Based Person-Centred Model of Engagement for Public Art-Science Activity that Supports Societal Transformation
Supervisors
- Dr Keith Michael Armstrong (Associate Supervisor)
- Professor Bree Jamila Hadley (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
This research used iterative testing to generate a new person-centred values-based model of stakeholder engagement for artists, curators, producers and other creatives of public art-science projects aiming to motivate people to address climate change. A working hypothesis of stakeholder engagement was tested in four case studies to provide a new model of engagement. This model, tailored to a project proponent of art-science projects, identifies four stakeholder groups categorised by how and why the proponent may engage with them. A second testing confirmed the effectiveness of the new values-based and person-centred model of stakeholder engagement for public art-science activity.

Beyond the Pink and Fluffy: Centering Tiddaism, Indigeneity, and Intersectionality in the 'Chick Lit' Novel
Supervisors
- Mr Craig Bolland (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Rohan David Wilson (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
This study examines how the chick lit genre can evolve to be more inclusive and representative by focusing on an Aboriginal, queer, fat perspective. It offers insights into the barriers and opportunities for marginalised voices within the Australian publishing industry. The findings underscore the significance of intersectionality as a guiding principle to ensure that commercial fiction does not perpetuate harm or offense to marginalised communities and provides scope for further research in this area.

The Creative Impact of the Symbiosis between Funding Agencies and Arts Sector: A Comparative Case Study of Hong Kong and Australia
Supervisors
- Professor Sandra Jane Gattenhof (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Sophie Annabelle Amy McIntyre (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Jeremy Neideck (External Supervisor)
Citation
This comparative study examines the relationship between public arts funding agencies and performing arts companies in Hong Kong and Australia post-2020. Drawing on the ecological concept of symbiosis, the study demonstrates how the patron model, which upholds the arm’s length principle to funding and within a frame of excellence, evolves. The study argues that the funding approach of Hong Kong displays elements of New Public Management (NPM) with emphasis on efficiency whereas the Australian model demonstrates features of Public Value Management (PVM). Findings suggest that major companies enjoy a more symmetrical relationship with their funders compared with small-medium arts companies.
