Thesis Title

An Aetiology of Policing Sieges: How Offender Backgrounds, Characteristics, and Motivations Impact Outcomes of Policing Crisis Intervention

Supervisors

  • Professor Cassandra Aleisha Cross  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Mark Adam Lauchs  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Dr Peter Martin  (External Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis examined high-risk policing sieges using a collective case study approach (n=26) to investigate how offender backgrounds, characteristics, and motivations impact siege dynamics and crisis intervention outcomes. Thematic analysis, based on death investigation documents and non-public coronial data, revealed strong links between offenders orchestrating sieges and the intention to induce victim-precipitated homicide. Analysis of negotiation transcripts, body-worn footage, and witness statements helped identify factors predicting future violence and key flags for escalating risk, leading to practical recommendations for both general duties and tactical police, including enhanced training, pre-arrival risk assessment tools, and the development of a community of practice.

Thesis Title

Making Men: Investigating Adolescent Boys' Experiences of a School-Based Rites of Passage Program

Supervisors

  • Dr Ian Davis  (External Supervisor)
  • Professor Michael Gaston Flood  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Martin David Mills  (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis examines how a school-based rites of passage program influences adolescent boys' understandings of their identities and their transitions to adulthood. Set in an Australian all-boys’ school, the study investigates whether such programs can challenge harmful gender norms and foster positive identity development. Findings show that while the program enhances personal growth and peer relationships, it falls short in promoting a deeper understanding of gender equity issues. This research highlights the need for rites of passage programs to encourage boys to critically engage with and rethink traditional ideas of harmful masculinities and power.

Thesis Title

Occupational Culture, Accommodation, and Decision-Making: South-East Queensland Child Protection Worker Perspectives

Supervisors

  • Associate Professor Jodi Elizabeth Death  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Kelly May Richards  (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

The challenge of understanding occupational culture and its influence on decision making is explored in this thesis, through the lens of Professional Accommodation Syndrome. Using a qualitative study, the project gained the unique perspectives of former child safety officers to help understand the influence of occupational culture on both decision-making processes and outcomes. In expanding the Professional Accommodation framework, the project found that occupational culture does influence child protection and subsequently decision-making, leading to decisions that are either too risk averse, too risk tolerant, or not sufficiently child focused. This knowledge seeks to improve working environments for child protection workers.

Thesis Title

Non-Mobilised Pathways to Socio-Political Participation by Marginalised Youth in Authoritarian Contexts

Supervisors

  • Adjunct Professor Helen May Berents  (External Supervisor)
  • Adjunct Professor Melissa Anne Bull  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Angela Michelle Higginson  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Dr Caitlin Julie Mollica  (External Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis explores the socio-political participation of marginalised youth in authoritarian Zimbabwe to advance the under-researched concept of social nonmovements. Drawing on interviews and virtual ethnographic research with Zimbabwean youth, it highlights barriers such as repression, structural marginalisation, and lack of state support, which creates crises in youth citizenship and livelihoods. Developing concepts of social nonmovements, hustling and waithood, it shows how youth participate in non-mobilised ways through survival-focused activities and informal networks. This thesis critiques the common focus on politically active youth in democracies, filling a research gap on marginalised youth in the global south and their everyday participation.

The Role of Community-Based Arts in Supporting Gender-Based Violence Survivors in Papua New Guinea

Supervisors

  • Professor Donna Maree Hancox  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Adjunct Associate Professor Jacqueline Rose Kauli  (External Supervisor)
  • Dr Juliana Mohok Mclaughlin  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Adjunct Associate Professor Verena Thomas  (External Supervisor)

Citation

This research investigated support mechanisms for Gender Based Violence (GBV) survivors at community level in Papua New Guinea (PNG). The study involved an examination of different ways cultural art forms and creative performances can be used to strengthen community efforts to mitigate impacts of GBV. Arts-based and Indigenous research methodologies informed data collection methods through creative workshops, reflections, and discussions. Development of Wagawaga socio-ecological model for supporting GBV survivors in this study identified essential considerations such as community ownership of programs, integration of Indigenous Knowledge principles, and artists as facilitators for implementing sustainable community-based arts programs in rural PNG communities.

Thesis Title

Blaming Victims of Online Romance and Investment Frauds: An Analysis of Two Theoretical Perspectives

Supervisors

  • Professor Cassandra Aleisha Cross  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Kelly May Richards  (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

Online romance and investment fraud are growing crimes in Australia by volume and funds lost but are known to attract high levels of victim blame, commonly perceived as stupid, gullible, and undeserving of justice. ‘The Fraud Justice Network’ (FJN) refers to the multitude of institutions that aim to combat frauds, but little is known about how and why professionals within these entities perceive and ascribe victimhood to fraud victims. This study presents findings of perspectives and experiences of the FJN in Australia, of romance and investment fraud victims through fourteen semi-structured interviews with FJN professionals.

Thesis Title

Navigating the Paradox: Judicial Decision-Making About Young People Who Sexually Offend

Supervisors

  • Adjunct Professor Helen May Berents  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Kelly May Richards  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Dr Nigel Stobbs  (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis explores judicial decision-making about young people who have sexually offended. Using both sentencing remarks and interviews with Australian judicial officers it examines the attributions about sexual offending that judicial decision-makers draw upon in determining the level of seriousness of the offending and the culpability of the young offender. This thesis has generated new knowledge about how judicial decision-makers make sense of the competing notions of serious sexual offending and youthful immature offenders.

Exploring Intergenerational Dialogue in Youth-Led Social Movements: The Case of Yasunidos in Ecuador

Supervisors

  • Adjunct Professor Helen May Berents  (External Supervisor)
  • Dr Caitlin Julie Mollica  (External Supervisor)
  • Adjunct Professor Erin O'Brien  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Dr Laura Elizabeth Vitis  (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis conceptualises intergenerational dialogue to enrich understandings of youth political participation. Using the case study of Yasunidos, a youth-led environmental social movement in Ecuador, it deepens understandings of intergenerational dynamics and their role in shaping inclusive and impactful youth activism. It draws on interviews with older and younger activists to reveal the importance of intergenerational dialogue in fostering mutual respect and empathy between younger and older generations, challenging generational divides and discourses of youth political apathy. It bridges Global North and Global South scholarship, centering Latin American perspectives to address a gap in political sociology literature on youth participation.
