Thesis Title
Establishing Evidence for Preoperative Dietary Interventions to Reduce Risks Associated with Non-bariatric Surgery in Adults with Obesity: The Role of a Dietitian-led Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD) Clinic
Supervisors
- Dr Michelle Ann Palmer (External Supervisor)
- Dr Lynda Jacqueline Ross (Principal Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Esben Stig Strodl (Mentoring Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis addresses the higher risks faced by people living with obesity undertaking non-bariatric surgeries, including longer recovery times and increased complications. It found that a dietitian-led Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD) Clinic can improve health and reduce surgical risks, supporting better pre-surgery care for individuals living with obesity, potentially leading to safer surgical outcomes and enhanced recovery. In a global climate of ever-increasing demand to provide surgical intervention for adults living with obesity, this work presents a major step forward in changing clinical practice - both in Australia and internationally.

Thesis Title
Goal-Directed Therapeutic Exercise in Paediatric Survivors of Posterior Fossa Brain Tumours
Supervisors
- Ms Emmah June Marjorie Baque (External Supervisor)
- Professor Natalie Katrina Bradford (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Carolina Ximena Sandler (External Supervisor)
- Adjunct Professor Stewart Graeme Trost (Principal Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis investigated the role of goal-directed therapeutic exercise in enhancing the quality of survivorship in paediatric survivors of posterior fossa brain tumours. Goal-directed therapeutic exercise appears to be a safe and feasible approach to exercise therapy and reported excellent participant satisfaction. The results demonstrated that goal-directed exercise is likely effective at improving cardiorespiratory fitness and goal attainment for survivors who underwent chemotherapy and radiation therapy. This research addressed the significant knowledge gap in the application of a goal-directed approach to therapeutic exercise in childhood cancer survivors.

Thesis Title
Understanding the Physiological Demands and the Role of Exercise in Esports
Supervisors
- Associate Professor Vincent Gerard Kelly (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Craig Ryan McNulty (Principal Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Robert Robergs (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis explores the physiological demands and role of exercise in competitive esports. It examines physical activity behaviours, motivations, and the impact of exercise on esports athletes, revealing that e’athletes often over-report their physical activity while showing high intrinsic motivation to exercise. The research highlights significant metabolic demands and cardiovascular stress experienced during gameplay. Additionally, a 10-week exercise intervention showed improvements in executive function, cerebral hemodynamics, and heart rate variability, suggesting that regular exercise can enhance both cognitive performance and health in esports athletes. These findings offer valuable insights to guide future research and practice in esports.

Thesis Title
Dads at Mealtimes: Paternal Feeding Roles, Practices and Experiences in the Context of Disadvantage
Supervisors
- Dr Kimberley Anne Baxter (Principal Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Rebecca Ann Byrne (Associate Supervisor)
- Professor Danielle Gallegos (Mentoring Supervisor)
- Dr Smita Nambiar Mann (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This research is an exploratory study looking at fathers’ experiences in child feeding, particularly those living with disadvantage. This thesis explores paternal feeding practices and fathers’ contributions, roles and experiences related to parenting and child feeding. It demonstrates the intricate nature of paternal feeding within the context of food insecurity, highlighting the multifaceted factors that influence paternal involvement and responsive feeding practices across the ecological systems. Leveraging co-design and lived experience expertise, the findings have implications for intervention design, policy and practices aiming to support fathers in nurturing care and child nutrition.
