What you'll receive

You'll receive:

  • a stipend scholarship of $32,192 per annum for a maximum duration of 3.5 years while undertaking a QUT PhD. The duration includes an extension of up to 6 months (PhD) if approved for your candidature. This is the full-time, tax-exempt rate which will index annually
  • a tuition fee offset/sponsorship, covering the cost of your tuition fees for the first 4 full-time equivalent years of your doctoral studies
  • the opportunity to work with a team of leading researchers, to undertake your own innovative research in and across the field.

Eligibility

You need to meet the entry requirements for a QUT Doctor of Philosophy, including any English language requirements.

You must:

  • enrol as a full-time, internal student and commence by 31 July 2025
  • have a master’s degree in data science, computer science, operational research, transport engineering, or related discipline
  • have a strong background in data science, machine learning, statistical analysis, or a relevant field
  • be proficient in programming languages such as Python, R, or similar, for data manipulation, analysis, and modeling
  • have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to derive meaningful insights from complex datasets
  • have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for presenting research findings and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams
  • have the ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple tasks and priorities effectively
  • have lodged your thesis for external examination by September 2024 if you are currently completing a master’s by research degree
  • satisfy any conditions stated on your offer letter by the 31 March 2025.

Demonstrated publication record (or potential) in peer-reviewed conferences or journals is advantageous.

  • The first step is to email Professor Ashish Bhaskar detailing your academic and research background, your motivation to research in this field and interest in this scholarship, include your CV, and contact details of two academic referees.
  • If supported to apply, you will then submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) following the advice at How to apply for a research degree.

About the scholarship

This PhD position aims to harness the potential of big traffic and mobility data alongside cutting-edge AI/ML algorithms to pioneer innovative solutions for optimizing smart motorways and/or arterial traffic flow. By leveraging these technologies, the project endeavours to develop and test smart algorithms, with the goal of significantly enhancing the efficiency and safety of road networks.

The outcome of this research is expected to be used by the industry partners and will have a direct impact on the state of the art and practice in transport industry.
