QUT’s Professor Chelsea Watego was recognised in the 2022 Queensland Literary Awards for her book Another Day in the Colony.
Professor Watego received The Courier-Mail People’s Choice Queensland Book of the Year Award, an award presented to an outstanding book by a Queensland author and determined by public vote.
The book, published by UQP, is a collection of deeply insightful and powerful essays which examine the ongoing and daily racism faced by First Nations people.
Arts Minister Leeanne Enoch said the Queensland Literary Awards paid special tribute to writers of all levels of achievement, and diversity.
Receiving the award, Professor Watego said it was particularly significant to her that she had won the prize that was decided by popular vote.
“This speaks to the significance of the black reader who has long been denied texts that nourish us, in favour of texts that serve the dispossessing agenda of the colonial project,” Professor Watego said.
Rebecca Cheers, from QUT’s School of Creative Practice, was also recognised in the awards in receiving a Queensland Premier's Young Publishers and Writers Awards which are awarded to outstanding Queensland writers up to 30 years of age.
