Connect to a growing industry
‘I’ve always been interested in technology and health, so the opportunity to study both in one course was a no brainer for me. From first semester I went on multiple site visits and learnt fundamentals for working in the Australian health system. We also had several fantastic networking opportunities. It’s been great to speak to and hear from people who live and breathe the profession. Their excitement and enthusiasm has been infectious.’
A rewarding career
'I really enjoy the variety of my work, there are so many activities within the hospital that rely on the skillset of Health Information Managers (HIMs), my role is always interesting. I work on many safety and quality measures through auditing and reporting on clinical documentation within the patient record. I provide ongoing education to clinicians on how to improve their documentation. HIMs also work to ensure that the hospital is appropriately funded for the casemix of patients treated. It’s really rewarding to be able to use my skills to help others.'
Study online
When Tim Gillies decided to switch careers he chose to study the Bachelor of Health Information Management. Returning to uni can be challenging but online study options, a small cohort, and supportive staff can make all the difference.
Be in demand
'I love that I'm able to improve the delivery of healthcare services from behind the scenes. The QUT staff had really strong industry connections that helped me secure my first job as a student health information manager and then my full-time employment at Ipswich Hospital.'
