This course has been designed in consultation with clinical staff from industry and is taught by registered professionals with extensive experience. The content incorporates clinical skills and hands-on experience from your first semester.
The Bachelor of Radiation Therapy is a professional degree providing graduates with a highly specialised qualification. This course is not designed as a bridging course for a different career.
Your studies will cover the interaction of radiation on body tissue, radiation therapy treatment planning, X-ray and CT image matching, and treatment delivery in a virtual environment.
Real-world learning
Our on-campus facilities incorporate technology and equipment to develop your confidence and experience. The Virtual Environment for Radiotherapy Training uses augmented reality 3D technology to immerse you in a virtual environment that features life-sized radiation therapy equipment and virtual patients.
By practising in our facilities you will build confidence and gain experience in fundamental skills using specialist computer programs and the virtual treatment environment.
You will start supervised clinical experience during first semester in your first year, with significant time in the second, third and fourth years. Placements are offered in private and public radiation therapy departments throughout Queensland and interstate areas.

What to expect
Radiation therapy is a rewarding career and is a combination of patient care, emotional support, science and technology. As part of a multidisciplinary medical team, radiation therapists plan and deliver highly accurate radiation treatment to cancer patients. Typically, a patient receiving radiation therapy will see the radiation therapist every day for several weeks and you will need to be able to demonstrate empathy and a caring nature towards a wide range of patients.
Careers and outcomes
Honours pathway
At the end of the second year of study in this course you will have the option to apply for the Bachelor of Radiation Therapy (Honours). This allows you to complete an honours research project that extends your knowledge of the professional field.
High performing students will have the opportunity to submit an expression of interest for the Honours pathway. On entry to the course you will retain all of the credit you have successfully completed in the Bachelor of Radiation Therapy and will complete a further two years of full-time study.
Careers and outcomes
Graduates of this course may work as a radiation therapist in the radiotherapy department of a private or public facility. There are also research and educational opportunities.
Professional recognition
This course is an approved program of study with the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia.
Student registration
QUT automatically registers students enrolled in this course with the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia in accordance with the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law Act 2009. Assumed knowledge
Before you start this course, we assume you have sound knowledge of the subject/s listed below. If you don't have the subject knowledge, you can still apply for the course but we strongly encourage you to undertake bridging studies to gain the knowledge:
English, or Literature, or English and Literature Extension, or English as an Additional Language (Units 3 & 4, C)
Mathematical Methods, or Specialist Mathematics (Units 3 & 4, C)
Adjustments from the Year 12 Subject Scheme do not apply to this course. Any other adjustments you receive to your ATAR or selection rank will be applied to this course.
QUT will consider equivalent overseas qualifications for admissions purposes. If you have tertiary qualifications from countries where English is not the standard language of instruction, you must provide evidence of English language proficiency.
English language proficiency
We require students to demonstrate they can speak, write, read and comprehend academic English to a specified standard.
Our English proficiency requirements for this course are:
IELTS (Academic): 7.0 or better overall with no subscore below 6.5
PTE: 65 or better overall with no subscore below 58
TOEFL (IBT): 98 or better overall with a writing subscore of 24 or better, and other subscore below 20
Cambridge English Score: 185 or better overall with no subscore below 176
The test must have been completed within 2 years prior to the proposed course start month.
Advanced standing
If you have prior studies or work experience, you may be eligible for advanced standing (credit). You can apply for advanced standing once you've been accepted to QUT. If you're in your first semester of study, you must apply for advanced standing within 10 days of receiving your offer.

Course requirements
There are requirements that you will need to meet as a student in this course. You will need to identify these requirements and ensure you allow sufficient time to meet them. Some of these requirements have associated costs.
Blue card: You must undergo a criminal history check for working with children and be issued with a suitability card (blue card) before commencing clinical placement/practicum in an organisation where they may work with children or young people.
The processing of your application may take several months so you must submit your blue card application to HiQ as early as possible to ensure you have your card before you begin any unit that requires contact with children. There is no charge for student blue cards. Students who already have a blue card must register it with QUT.
Mandatory notifications: While you are registered as a student with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), QUT has an obligation to notify AHPRA if you have an impairment that may place the public at substantial risk of harm when undertaking clinical training.
