Choosing communication at QUT

I chose to study a Bachelor of Communication at QUT because I love creativity. When I was in high school, I was interested in filming, planning events, and performing. QUT’s communication course allows me to express my boundless creativity, find innovative ways to communicate ideas, and build connections with people. The course offers a perfect balance of strategy and creativity, which aligns with my strengths and interests. Additionally, I wanted a career that is dynamic and enables me to influence how brands connect with their audiences. I’m also passionate about understanding how media impacts society, and this course equips me with the skills and knowledge to contribute meaningfully to this ever-evolving field.

My pathway to a bachelor degree

I came to QUT after graduating from high school in Vietnam. I chose the Diploma in Creative Industries pathway program (one year), which fast-tracked me to the second year of the Bachelor of Communication degree. As an international student, a pathway program is an ideal option because it allows us to become familiar with a new education system without feeling overwhelmed.

The Diploma of Creative Industries helped me adjust to the university environment. It also improved my writing skills for assignments and provided me with fundamental knowledge relevant to my bachelor’s degree.

Real-world experiences

Throughout my degree, I have participated in work experiences at QUT, including roles as a Student Voice Success representative, an International Peer Leader, and involvement in various projects with student clubs. I contributed to developing a marketing strategy for a new club at QUT, collaborating with others to encourage students to complete surveys during their teaching periods and assisting international students transitioning to QUT for the first time. This opportunity enabled me to apply the theoretical knowledge gained in class to real-world settings and enhance my interpersonal skills for working in multicultural environments.

The university’s emphasis on real-world learning, particularly in communications, stood out to me as it aligns with my goal of gaining hands-on experience and being career-ready upon graduation. At QUT, I can participate in many competitions relevant to my course, and thanks to winning the Ad student X TikTok competition, I secured my first-ever internship at a prestigious agency in Brisbane.

To me, the 'real world' means applying what you learn in practical, professional settings where your work has a genuine impact. My course at QUT felt 'real world' because we worked on live campaigns, tackled real client briefs, and received feedback from industry professionals. It wasn’t just about theory—we were creating, presenting, and solving real problems, which prepared me for the challenges of the industry. For instance, during the managing social media unit in my Diploma in Creative Industries course, I had a chance to work with real-world clients such as Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) and QUT Library. We created social media strategies and gained advice from them. Opportunities at QUT are always around us. You can use assignments to build up your portfolio or CV, and if you do your assignments well, you might have the chance to bring them to life with real clients.
