I have always had a strong interest in mathematics. I chose mathematics at QUT because I believe that mathematics is the cornerstone of numerous fields and has a wide range of applications in various industries. A mathematics degree is adaptable. It gives a solid analytical and problem-solving foundation that may be used to a variety of careers, such as academia, data science, finance, or working in the tech industry. A mathematics degree opens up a world of opportunities.
Mathematics at QUT
QUT is a young institution with a high ranking in comparison to other new universities. QUT offers many industry connections in the real world for students to use when they graduate. QUT has several scholarships to help students who are struggling financially, but even more importantly, QUT provides a scholarship for students who have excellent academic results, such as the International Merit Scholarship.
QUT's student support services are extremely beneficial, including writing and assignment feedback; study and presentation skills; maths, science, and IT support, such as developing STEM skills; and guidance with assessment items. QUT also offers career management skills, which allow us to investigate career options while increasing our employability, leadership and development, such as attending workshops, conferences, and volunteering on campus.
I appreciate how QUT staff and tutors assist students in completing their studies, and they are very helpful when I am struggling with my assignments. QUT offers excellent student support services and has a large number of international students with whom you can easily communicate if you come from another country.
Coming from Thailand
Since I am from Thailand and didn’t know many people or friends here, QUT is like a safe haven for me. There are many international students who have chosen to study at QUT, so I can get to know them. I made friends at lectures and workshops. Sometimes there is a group project where students cannot choose their group members, so we wind up working with people we don't know and eventually become friends.
As an international student, English is not my first language, and QUT provided me the option to study a foundation course that was an intensive programme for 6 months, which really assisted me in improving my English skills. The tutors were really helpful, friendly, and lovely. They were aware that we were not native English speakers, and they worked tirelessly to assist us. Throughout the course, I met people from various backgrounds.
Maths is everywhere
My favourite part of this course is the capstone unit, where we get to learn theoretical parts and then apply them to real-world problems. Students get to solve real-world problems that aren't just math equations, as some people believe, and we get to solve them in assignments, group projects, and other ways.
I get asked a lot what I am going to do with a maths degree. I would like to say that maths is everywhere, in every field, wherever you go, whatever you do, maths will always be there.
