Why study digital communication at QUT
After completing my bachelor's degree in international communication management, I wondered what my study focus should be if I continued higher education. I was torn between a degree in Creative Writing or one in Digital Communication/Data Analytics. Then, after I started working in AI, which was about three months before the launch of ChatGPT, I truly saw the importance of data in the communications field. I'm not good with numbers and statistics, but seeing how data can tell a story intrigued me. I did some research, and the QUT Master of Digital Communication interested me.
I chose to study a Master of Digital Communication at QUT because the university is renowned for its media and communication programs. Additionally, the university is young, with more affordable fees and clearer objectives for students.
What ‘real-world’ learning looks like in digital communication
Real world to me means the well-being and livelihood of people. What I truly appreciate about the culture in Australia is how the respect and well-being of people are prioritised. The kind of communication-related work I want to do ideally also helps improve people's lives. I've been told that this wish is naive, but the environment and education I'm receiving at QUT are proving otherwise. QUT honours people and teaches us to use technology ethically and to be communication professionals who care for others and see beyond numbers. That's the real world.
Applying my skills in the real world
I am currently working as a Marketing Coordinator at an event company called Lup Events, located in Brisbane CBD. My main tasks are to revamp and manage the company newsletter, which is sent out to a huge database of 400,000 people. Building a newsletter is something I've been working on for myself, but having the opportunity to do it for a business with such a massive audience is both exciting and daunting.
QUT, a supportive place for students
I would recommend QUT to future students because the university has great student support, a wonderful global environment, and amazing, supportive staff. Whilst studying at QUT, I've met people from many diverse cultures and backgrounds, and everyone is so open-minded. We may have different opinions, but we listen to each other and respect opposing views. That's certainly something I didn't experience during my early days of studying.
