Applying knowledge in real-world situations

I chose to study at QUT because I am particularly drawn to their emphasis on real-world concepts in the finance field. QUT truly walks their talk, integrating their educational philosophy seamlessly into their curriculum. QUT’s degrees are designed to bridge the gap between academic theories and real-world applications. This practical approach to learning is important to me because I believe that theory alone isn't enough; it must be applied in real-world situations.

The real-world aspect of my course went beyond theoretical learning to focus on practical application in professional settings. It involved engaging in hands-on projects and assignments that simulated real-life challenges faced in the industry. Through these experiences, I learned to adapt theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios, gaining essential skills like problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication. Additionally, opportunities such as internships and industry collaborations provided firsthand exposure to the dynamics and demands of the field, preparing me to navigate and excel in real-world environments after graduation.

QUT’s dedication to providing a practical, industry-integrated education in finance makes it the perfect choice for me. Their approach aligns perfectly with my belief that true understanding comes from being able to apply knowledge in real-world situations, and I am confident that QUT will equip me with both the theoretical foundation and practical skills needed to achieve my career aspirations in finance.

Shaping my career aspirations in finance

I decided to study finance during my master degree because I have always been deeply fascinated by the intricacies of the financial world. From a young age, I found myself drawn to the dynamics of markets, the strategic thinking required for investment, and the critical role finance plays in driving global economies. This passion naturally evolved into a clear career ambition: to work in investment banking. Investment banking represents the pinnacle of financial careers for me, offering the opportunity to engage with complex financial instruments, provide strategic advice to corporations, and be at the forefront of significant economic activities. With this goal in mind, I recognised the need for a robust and diverse educational background to excel in such a competitive field.

I really enjoyed all the units throughout my QUT Master of Business degree! The combination of excellent teaching, practical application, and advanced facilities made my time at QUT incredibly fulfilling and instrumental in shaping my career aspirations in finance. Beyond the technical skills, I also gained many valuable soft skills, such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving, which are essential in the finance industry.

Two units that particularly stood out for me were the capstone unit and econometrics. The capstone unit was incredibly engaging because it allowed us to apply our theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios. We worked on complex financial problems, developed strategies, and presented our solutions, which provided a comprehensive understanding of how finance operates in practice. This hands-on experience was invaluable and gave me insights into the challenges and dynamics of the financial world. The econometrics unit was another highlight. It was fascinating to delve into data analysis and statistical methods to interpret economic trends and forecast future financial scenarios. The practical applications of econometrics in analysing market behaviour and making data-driven decisions were both challenging and rewarding. This unit not only honed my analytical skills but also enhanced my ability to think critically and strategically.

Vibrant student community

I met people and made friends on campus through various avenues, such as participating in student clubs, collaborating with classmates in group projects and coursework, and attending QUT's social events. QUT organises a range of social gatherings, including welcome parties at the beginning of each semester, networking events, and cultural celebrations that foster a vibrant campus community. These events provided opportunities to connect with peers outside of academic settings, share common interests, and build lasting friendships.

I was involved as an executive member in the Malaysian student club at QUT, known as QUTMYSA, where I served as the Event Director. Being part of this club allowed me to organise various events and activities that brought students together, creating a sense of community and camaraderie among Malaysian students at QUT. I particularly enjoyed the opportunity to meet and collaborate with diverse individuals from different backgrounds, as it enriched my university experience and broadened my perspective. Our events not only provided a platform for social interaction but also served as a ‘home away from home for many international Malaysian students, fostering friendships and support networks that extended beyond campus life. It was fulfilling to contribute to creating memorable experiences and a welcoming environment for everyone involved in the club.

I highly recommend QUT to others! QUT offers a robust academic environment with a practical focus, which prepares students well for their careers by emphasising real-world applications of knowledge. The university also provides excellent support services and opportunities for internships and industry placements, which are invaluable for gaining hands-on experience and building professional networks. Lastly, QUT's diverse and inclusive community fosters a supportive and enriching learning environment, making it a great choice for students seeking a well-rounded and fulfilling university experience.

Choosing QUT has been a rewarding journey for me, and I believe it can be for you too. It's a place where you can grow academically, professionally, and personally, surrounded by a supportive community that values your success. Take the time to explore what QUT has to offer—you won't regret it.
