Public health at QUT

I chose to study a Bachelor of Public Health because I am interested in serving in an international organisation like the World Health Organisation (WHO) or the United Nations, and the public health course is relevant to helping various communities. I chose QUT because the university has a diverse group of international students, which is an added advantage for students and would enrich my studying experience. QUT also has a commendable ranking and was one of the few universities that offered public health.

What it’s like in class

I enjoy group work and presentations in my classes as it allows me to interact with other students and I find it to be interesting and engaging. I made most of my new friends in the library and during class projects. We explore real world issues like gender inequality, life threatening diseases and lifestyle choices that have a huge impact on our world. While my expectations were high, I was sceptical whether the course would be merely informative and technical. To my surprise, I found it to be very relevant and current. For example, discussions on sports inequality allowed us to explore and think about what's happening in real time around the world.

Advice for future public health students

UN Sustainable Development GoalsI enjoy the informal chats with lecturers who are very nurturing and helpful and I find they are very approachable. For instance, in one unit, I was blown away by the insights I received from my lecturer during our chats and in-class lectures, especially the week we were briefed by the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Cancer Council Queensland. As a student all you need to do is ask them and they are super willing to guide you. At the end of the day it’s up to you to reap the benefits of the course. Engage with your lecturers and peers to obtain greater insights and guidance. You will surely enjoy the course.

I certainly recommend QUT to others because the university has a good academic support system and I am enjoying my study thus far. QUT has also allowed me to reach my potential as a student and have been helpful throughout my journey so far. I think the university has a beautiful campus and I believe I have made the right decision in choosing QUT.
