Fiona Dang and Sandra Ngo, 27 February, 2025
We spoke to students, Sandra and Fiona, about their experience studying nursing at QUT. Both Sandra and Fiona have come to study here from Vietnam and shared how their lives have been shaped by the QUT nursing program’s placement, support and camaraderie with fellow students.
Shaped by nursing
Fiona - Studying nursing aligns perfectly with my desire to make a positive difference in the lives of others. The profession embodies the principles of empathy, care, and service that I hold dear. By becoming a nurse, I aim to contribute to improving healthcare access and quality for underprivileged communities, both in Vietnam and globally. My diverse background and experiences provide me with a unique perspective that I believe will enhance my ability to connect with and care for patients from various walks of life.
QUT's focus on interdisciplinary collaboration and community engagement resonates with my own values of compassion and social responsibility. The university's partnerships with healthcare providers and its involvement in community health initiatives offer valuable opportunities for me to contribute to and learn from real-world healthcare settings. This exposure will enhance my ability to advocate for marginalised groups and address systemic injustices within healthcare systems.
Shaped by placement
Sandra - During my first placement, I had the opportunity to work at an aged care facility. This was my first time in Australia, and it provided a profound learning experience. I engaged closely with elderly residents suffering from various conditions, pressure injuries, and loneliness. This placement not only helped me develop essential clinical skills but also gave me a deep understanding of the vulnerability that comes with aging and illness. It was a powerful reminder of the inevitable challenges people face in life, regardless of how vibrant their youth may have been.

Fiona - My clinical placements were invaluable, providing hands-on experience in real healthcare settings. These placements allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge in practice, develop critical clinical skills, and gain insights into patient care. The opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals during my placements was instrumental in shaping my nursing journey. Their mentorship and the practical challenges I encountered prepared me for a successful career in nursing.
In my first year, I had a placement at an aged care facility, where I was involved in providing daily care and support to elderly residents. This experience was invaluable in developing my communication skills and understanding the importance of compassionate, patient-centred care.
In my second year, I had a placement in a Cardiac Catheter Laboratory at a hospital. Here, I assisted with various procedures, such as getting patients ready for an angiogram and providing recovery care for them, observed complex cardiac interventions, and learned about the critical aspects of cardiovascular nursing. This placement was particularly valuable as it allowed me to apply my theoretical knowledge in a high-pressure clinical environment, enhancing my technical skills and understanding of advanced patient care.
These experiences allowed me to work with real patients, collaborate with experienced healthcare professionals, and tackle real-life medical situations which were instrumental in shaping my practical skills and professional growth, providing a solid foundation for my nursing career.
Shaped by support
Sandra - As an international student, I was pleasantly surprised by the exceptional support QUT provides throughout the course. The university's staff, including those at HiQ student services, my unit coordinator, my tutors, and even the bookstore and IT staff, have been incredibly helpful and supportive in every aspect of my nursing studies. Their dedication and assistance have significantly alleviated the stress associated with nursing school, making the experience much more manageable and enjoyable. Prospective students should know that they will find a supportive and encouraging environment at QUT.
Fiona - I was fortunate to receive the International Merit Scholarship - Health from QUT in 2023. This scholarship provided a 25% reduction in tuition fees, which was immensely beneficial to me as an international student. The financial assistance relieved some of the financial burden associated with studying abroad, allowing me to focus more on my academic pursuits without worrying as much about the cost of tuition. This scholarship not only eased the financial strain but also served as a source of motivation and encouragement, reinforcing my commitment to academic excellence and contributing to my overall success at QUT.
Shaped by camaraderie
Sandra - I am a part of the Undergraduate Nursing Students Society at QUT, known as SUN. I greatly enjoy seeing how dedicated the members are in organising events to support other nursing students. This involvement has provided me with a sense of community and has allowed me to witness firsthand the commitment and creativity of my peers. Participating in these activities has been both inspiring and rewarding, as it fosters a collaborative environment where we can share knowledge and support each other in our nursing journey.
I met people and made friends primarily through my classes and placements. Collaborative group projects and class discussions provided natural opportunities to interact with classmates. Additionally, during placements, working closely with peers in real-world healthcare settings fostered strong connections and camaraderie. These shared experiences in both academic and practical environments were instrumental in building friendships on campus.
Fiona - I met people and made friends at QUT by joining student clubs, attending campus events, and participating in group projects. These activities provided opportunities for casual conversations, networking, and collaboration, ultimately leading to lasting friendships.
I volunteered for the QUT Guild and assisted with Welcome Week activities. What I enjoyed most about this experience was the opportunity to welcome new students to the university community and help them feel supported as they transitioned into university life. Being part of Welcome Week allowed me to connect with a diverse range of students, share my own experiences, and provide guidance and assistance to those who were just starting their journey at QUT. Volunteering for the QUT Guild gave me a sense of fulfillment knowing that I was contributing to the positive experience of my fellow students and making a difference in the university community.

This approach ensured I was well-prepared to provide effective care and make informed decisions in real-world healthcare settings. QUT's strong connections with leading healthcare providers offer invaluable opportunities for clinical placements and future employment. It’s one of the best decisions I have ever made.
