Looking for a career in healthcare but not sure what to study? You may not have considered medical imaging. Medical imaging combines a knowledge of science, technical skills and hands-on experience caring for people.
Radiographers (also known as a medical imaging technologists) use techniques such as X-ray, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to inform treatment and management of injuries or disease.
We spoke with Bachelor of Medical Imaging (Honours) students, Shruty from Mauritius and Dexter from Hong Kong, who told us how they have been inspired to help others through medical imaging.
Inspired to care for people in my community
Shruty - Growing up as a kid, I was always interested in numbers and the science of how things work. This led me to choose my three high school science majors: mathematics, physics, and chemistry. After excelling at the Cambridge International Exams for my A levels, I realised it was time to choose a career. Deep in my heart, I always wanted to fulfill my purpose of serving and caring for people in my community. That is when I decided to step into healthcare to serve my vision. The first things that come to anyone's mind are doctors, nurses, or paramedics. But I wanted to be different. I found out about medical imaging after researching various healthcare professions. Analysing human anatomy through X-rays, CT scans, MRIs and Ultrasound is fascinating to me. Working as a radiographer is a rewarding career as am able to interact with patients while applying diagnostic imaging skills in order to provide the best treatment possible.
Dexter - My family inspired me to pursue a career in the healthcare industry, and I've been intrigued by X-rays since I was a child. I chose to study at QUT because the university has a good reputation and one of the best medical imaging courses in Australia. Practical classes in the medical imaging laboratory are my favourite parts of my course. I can still remember the first time seeing the machine and taking my very first X-ray. It is a truly unique experience. There are different pathways that a radiographer can choose besides working in a hospital. Other pathways include working in a clinic, doing research or in radiography equipment sales.
Inspired to learn from the best
Shruty - I enjoy working in integrated learning units where I gain experience as a student radiographer under the supervision of professional radiographers. It gives me an idea of what a typical day in the life of my work entails, starting with machine setup, interacting with patients, completing different patient request forms, report analysis, and learning alongside radiologists. Since each patient is unique, I am exposed to a wider range of situations and learn various approaches to get the best diagnostic results.
I constantly learn something new from the work-integrated units while pursuing my degree. I am able to use the theoretical knowledge I have learned in these units under the guidance of certified radiographers. As a student radiographer, I participate in the process of taking X-ray images, communicating with patients, and learning about the daily responsibilities of practicing radiographers.

Dexter - I have undertaken work integrated learning units across different hospitals and clinics which involved working in the medical imaging department with professional radiographers. We have a lot of placement units starting from the first year which helps us to gain a lot of clinical experience. The most valuable part of these experiences is the patient interaction which you can only gain from hands-on clinical practice.
Inspired to try new things
Dexter - I chose to study in Brisbane because I wanted to experience a different culture and learn from a diverse group of people. Brisbane offers a lot of outdoor activities with a warm and sunny climate. QUT provides a wide range of support that are easily accessible. One thing I really like about it is they will send out emails to promote their services so that students know where to find help. I've joined the QUT College of Excellence. They hold regular activities such as catch-up meetings, sports events and workshops that allow me to meet more friends and try out new things.
Shruty - During Welcome Week, I met people on campus who encouraged me to join clubs. In my first year, I joined the MedRad (Medical Radiology) and K-pop clubs. Throughout my degree, these clubs have enabled me to make more friends. I adore taking part in various QUT events, such pizza nights and trivia, where I get to eat and socialise with amazing people. Engaging in group projects across many classes has also allowed me to develop deeper relationships with my peers and create more lasting connections.
Australia was one of my desired destinations for achieving my lifelong dream of studying abroad. I chose Brisbane because of the high calibre of education it provides. I'm in love with Brisbane's culture, people, food, and variety. It offers many opportunities along with a very busy daily lifestyle.

Shruty - QUT is the best option for me as the course makes us real world ready. The university is also equipped with modern X-ray technology which enables us to build skills using the machinery that we will be interacting with as future professional radiographers. It is a blessing to be taught by professionals who are closely related to the radiography field as we are always provided with up-to-date information on any changes, advancements, and various imaging techniques taking place in this field. Seminars are provided to students so they can stay current on developments in the medical radiation industry, including equipment and procedures that should be updated and used continuously throughout the duration of our degree.
I would heartily recommend QUT to others because it provides practical skills that can be applied to advance in both academic and professional settings. The university provides a range of degrees across all faculties and is a reputable institution in Brisbane that provides all its students with a top-notch education.
Dexter - I recommend studying at QUT because the university offers an amazing study experience. They have a wide range of courses with strong industry connections, and they provide different kinds of support to students, both academic and personal.
